Re the Yoga DVD - can't personally recommend any dvd's but a very good book is one called "Yoga: the spirit and practice of moving into stillness" by Erich Schiffmann. My yoga teacher recommended it to me and as well as giving detailed instructions on yoga postures it also has a lot about relaxation and meditation. I got it off amazon for £7.69 (normally £10.99). The author of this book also has a dvd/video but I've never seen it so can't offer any recommendations on it.
Yoga really is a wonderful way of helping to calm the chatter in our minds, even just a short session can help. A friend who was going through some life trauma's took up yoga and she said it really helped her. If you can't get to classes then I think its well worth getting a book or dvd to begin practicing yoga at home.

SnowyOwl wrote:Just wondering, are the Norman Vincent Peale books religious in nature? i went to the library yesterday to try and find his publications but there were none on the shelf. I'm not a religious person at all and this would put me off - but if they aren't then I think I'd ask the library to order a copy of The Power of Postive Thinking.
Absolutely not! I was going say in an earlier post not to be put off by the fact that they were written by a Reverend, but I didn't want to cause any offence to anyone.
The book is about what you can do for yourself.
I do have faith, but at the time I read the books I didn't. Nor was it anything to do with the books that I have discovered a faith recently!:snow_grin"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow........":snow_grin0 -
I've recently heard teachings about how all of us can so easily brick ourselves into a very cold and unfulfilling place, simply with the words we speak, and the words we've spoken in the past.
Life can be extremely hard (and I'm blessed to have come through some incredibly pressing situations in life, within the last couple of years), and sometimes we can say things to protect us.
"I'm NEVER going to do that again!"
"I'll never be able to do that on my own!"
"I hate soenso"
"I'll never be slim"
"I'll always be underweight"
"I can't resist food"
"Why do these things always happen to me?"
etc, etc, etc...
I'd hope that most of us can identify with these vows (and others) and remember times when we've said things like this in the past. We do it because we want to protect ourselves against future harm; us humans hate vulnerability and by speaking these words out we make vows in our hearts and minds.
Sometimes, our conscious even forgets about these things we've said, but the effects (the walls we erect) remain.
This can mean that we're often protected from the things people say or do, but these metaphorical walls often stop us seeing the good things around us...situations, people; the good things that people do, and don't do.
I just want to challenge you, by throwing something out there...
"Being in a place of vulnerability is not a bad thing"
The more of you there is for people to see, the more of you there is for people to love.
There are some amazing things locked up in there (inside)... but you're the only person who can let them out!
There've been some great suggestions here... and I'd ask that you think back to the times when you may have made vows to yourself. Of course, some vows are great.... but some can bind you. Try to identify these vows, and allow yourself to let go of them.
Let me know how you get on.
With much love,

Hi Ceegee, thanks for this feedback. The library is closed here until Wednesday but I'll definitely ask them to get hold of a copy for me then.
BTW I believe in live and let live, and hope my comments didn't make you (or anyone else) feel defensive about your faith. I prefer not to participate in an organised religion, but that's my choice just as your faith is your choice.

Absolutely no offence taken at all, SnowyOwl. Like you, I believe that we are all entitled to believe in whatever we want to, or not, as the case may be!:snow_grin"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow........":snow_grin0 -
Woooohooooo!
I have found a lady in our area who does Yoga on a couple of different days a week, and she says I can buy a course and mix the days (if you see what I mean). The next courses start in April - so I should be able to get to most of them.
Thanks for the advice - gave me the impetus to get out there and search."It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

eek, eek, eek, eek, the yoga starts tonight, and I am a bag of nerves. Keep deciding to bottle out, then having to tell myself to pull myself together etc.
aaarrrggghhh! I wish I was one of those sorts of people who could just 'do' things.
Read the 'Being Happy' book that Nelski recommended (thanks Nelski) - it was very useful. I am getting one book a month off Ebay (having to be careful due to finances lol).
I have been heaps better lately, just feeling the nerves today is all............."It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

Good luck with the yoga Luis! I've only just seen this thread but can't add any more than the great advice that's already been given. The one thing that helps me a lot that's already been mentioned is seeing negative comments from others as a reflection on them rather than myself.
