Cleaner stealing things..?

It depends on what they have available. Agencies tend to be more readily able to supply someone at shorter notice times. On the other hand, you could strike gold and get a word-of-mouth lady with a free weekly slot available.0

I'll have to give it some thought - weekly might be good because although there are no kids/pets my weekly clean only seems to last a few days. Ideally I'd want someone to do kitchen/bathroom, mop, hoover and dust everywhere else. Will have to call up to get some quotes. Do you have to book quite far in advance or will a few weeks notice do?
An agency I used to work for were very prompt, usually getting a cleaner to the client within the week. They did not take references as they can be faked and they didn't want to follow them up. They checked the cleaners with an interview in their own home where I had to provide proof of identity.
For the client, you have a vetted person in your home (although that seems not to always work) with a replacement being available for your regular cleaner's holidays and sickness. I would meet the client and be given keys and then get on with it.
In my experience though, clients were uncomfortable with me handing over the keys to someone they hadn't met and who didn't know their home so that was part of the service that went unused. There was also insurance of course but I didn't cause any damage to any house while I was working for them.
From my point of view, I was quite unhappy that they charged the client £12 an hour when I only got £8 so was quite happy when one client moved and we made a private arrangement in her new home.
Apart from the convenience of an agency doing the recruiting for you and the insurance you could find someone via Gumtree or maybe have someone recommended to you by a friend. That way you would pay less and have someone in your house who wasn't thinking from time to time of the percentage the agency were raking in.
To the OP, I am very sorry this has happened to you and do indeed hope the agency's insurance will cover this.

I've had a couple of cleaners who didn't want to deal with cat litter, some really good ones, some slackers, and one who loved ironing. All kinds of people become cleaners, and you just have to find a nice decent person who fits in with your household.
I agree, people coming to help in your home know you need help! At their best. 'cleaner' can become much, much more. My mothers ' best cleaners would encourage us to deal with clutter, note when maintenance wasa needed and help organise cupboards and clutter piles. They have been liked, and sometimes loved friends of the family.
I genuinely believe its one of the best methods of 'transfer of wealth too, and job provision for people who need or want flexible work.0 -
OP, did you ever get to the bottom of the missing items?I have a simple philosophy:

I hope the missing items were found.
My mum use to be a cleaner before she set up her own ironing service, she worked in a old folks home and cleaned private houses she never stole anything at all even if we find stuff now in peoples ironing we return it and let them know that we found it once found £75 in someones trousers when we mentioned it to him he forgot that he had took it out of the cash machine on a stag night so we could of easily of had it away if we wasn't so honest.
There are some honest people out there. I hope the OP comes back with a update.0
