Buying in bulk / stockpiling ....is it really worth it?

Just wanted to say 99p stores have Tate & Lyle sugar for 74p for 1kg if it helps anyone.
Fletch, I've been doing the same as you and hearing more and more people doing the same. It makes sense with the food prices increasing so quickly, I'm just having to be creative with where I store things. Toilet rolls are now on top of a bedroom cupboard, am thinking of having an understairs cupboard built because its just an open area at the moment!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
I have been following this thread as I am a fellow stockpiler, albeit a singleton so I have to curb myself sometimes.
Whilst I don't have to justify my spending to a DH or a DP, the way I look at it is that I am investing my money.
The tomatoes in Netto are 8p cheaper than Value in Mr T's so I am getting approx 33% on my money............. :j try getting that in a bank at the moment!!
...............and I only have to wait until I eat them to get the 'interest'.
You could 'make money' too. Buy them at 4 for 99p and re-purchase them from your own 'store' for 30p each as you use them, (still a bargain), and you make 21p on each pack. A way to save toward Christmas perhaps?0 -
We've been running a bulk buying regime in our house for the last two or three years. OH was well and truely convinced when he started to run the household budget spreadsheets. We too have toilet rolls stored all over the house :-)
OH put me up a set of IKEA shelves just for storing by bulk buys ... it's lovely, just like shopping from a supermarket :-)
It makes sense:
1. Because I have a wide range of basic ingredients to make a variety of quick and easy meals.
2. The weekly shop is simply for fresh fruit and veg. I'm not tempted to pop in any 'extras' ... so my shopping bill is reduced.
3. I have the time to look round for the best price (online) before my stock runs out, rather than to pay the going rate that week.
It is getting more difficult with the continuing price rises - but I'm still managing to keep my monthly shopping costs to within my budget (which hasn't changed for the last couple of years).
Thank you Frugalista for the tinned tomatoes alert :-)Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
Anybody have a good site to buy stuff like lentils, barley, cereal, dried fruit, etc ? The spare moeny we saved on the elect bill, we have decided to use it for stocking up on stuff that we eat a lot of.
So if we grow own veg this summer (hopefully ) then all we need to loads of pots of soup will be lentils and barley.
Cereal for the OH who gets tired of porridge every day, and he likes fruit & nuts & stuff in it--so that would be breakfasts taken care of.
And pudding rice for moi !
But where to get it ??0 -
Someone gave me the link to THIS SITE the other day - not used them myself yet but maybe worth a look?🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Hi Mardatha,
As your thread has dropped off the front page of Old Style, I've added it to the bulk buying / stockpiling thread where other likeminded Old Stylers will see your question and may be able to help.

For all those that bake a lot - the Co-op have 20% off all their FareTrade sugars for the next week or so. I've stocked up on most varieties
I'm also a loo roll hoarder - can't bear to pay full price for the stuff, but my DH can't understand the stockpile in the cupboard under the stairs. I keep telling him that if there's ever a shortage here as there was in Finland a few years ago, that we'll be okay for a good while and won't need to resort to using newspaper!!0 -

Mardatha, I thought I'd post the links I pm'd to you, in case anyone else is looking for the same thing

there are lots of others - I googled 'buy lentils online' and ticked the 'uk only' option. I searched on MSE too but didn't find any useful links... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Thanks for the link to natco Rosieben. I got all excited because I would like to buy dried beans in bulk but they only seem to sell the spices in bulk unless someone can point me in the right direction.
They also seem to sell the beans in 500g bags, but Tesco sell Natco 2kg bags in the world foods section so it might be best to buy those there.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
