  • Any comments that are deemed as anti-wealth, the 'politics of envy' or anti -success ARE different from racism and homophobia by virtue of the latter two being illegal. How you can draw comparisons to those is quite bizarre and illogical.

If you view racism as morally worse then the politics of envy, I would have to agree with you. If you are basing any judgement of this kind purely on what the law limits I would regard it as amoral and vaguely sociopathic.

I don't condone the swimmers actions, however, I do agree that the race is a pointless 'event' between two teams of privileged toffs where the majority of the country could not give a toss of the outcome.

Well yes, but at least they're very smart toffs (a number of 'em have doctorates) plus of course a lot of 'em are American, Australian, German etc 'toffs' - depending naturally, on who they've picked to do the actual rowing this year.
What is more annoying is the BBC coverage which in my mind is a total waste of license payers money ...

Of course, if it wasn't for the BBC coverage, I doubt if anyone would have bothered disrupting the event.

This race is 4.25 miles long and by the time this idiot had interrupted it the teams had already completed over 2 miles and then they had to redo the whole race.

I didn't watch the race but do know that this incorrect.

The race was re-started but from about the half-way point not from the original start position.

The President of the Oxford University Boat Club has blasted Oldfield on twitter "Finally to Trenton Oldfiled; my team went through seven months of hell, this was the culmination of our careers and you took it from us."

This race is 4.25 miles long and by the time this idiot had interrupted it the teams had already completed over 2 miles and then they had to redo the whole race. Add the broken oar and that 7 men instead of 8 had to take on the Cambridge team, then no wonder one of the Oxford rowers collapsed out of exhaustion.

Now I've never done proper rowing on a river, but I have used the rowing machines in the gym I can tell anyone it is bloody hard and these athletes get my respect.

"Seven months of helll"? "Bloody Hard" ? What a laugh.

Ask the guys (and girls) who are doing a 'bloody hard' stint in Helmand Province what seven months of hell really are.

When so many people are trying to blow you to bits puts a trivial event like the boat race and some clown seeking publicity into perspective.

The President of the Boat Club will likely be complaining that the 'apre race' Dom Perignon was not the correct temperature.

This comment has drifted off on a tangent somewhat.

Personally, I don't need things to be illegal to be distasteful or dangerous but maybe it's because it's not illegal that some feel they have the right to discriminate against others of different backgrounds?

I wasn't aware of that. All the news sources I've read have just said restart the race. I took that as restarting from the start and not where they stopped. I am pleased for the rowers if that is the case.

But it still doesn't take anything anyway from my full post. These rowers put a lot of training and hard work into this race for it to be spoilt. Not only that the true essence of the sporting event between two teams was ruined and the victory tainted. I feel sorry for them.

    I fully agree with you.

Some may see it as ironic though that many posters on this thread are making an issue of being envious of the rich and 'those who have' - when it is those 'have's' who have just robbed many 'have nots' in the recent budget when at the same time - looking after their own!

Some may suggest that such action is indeed discrimination.

If you are talking about "haves" then I hope you are including many of the Labour front bench, the Union leaders, Premier League footballers, reality TV personalities etc.
Or are you only talking about haves who were born in good postcodes with parents who were successful?

    I wasn't talking about anything.

If you read my post correctly, I alluded to the point that some people may see it ironic - which was not a personal opinion on the topic - just my thoughts on what others may think about it.

I was not aware that members of the Labour Party front bench, Union Leaders, Footballers or TV personalities had any input into George Osbourne's recent budget - although I suspect they all will benefit from the new tax threshold.
