but many thousands out there are probably unaware of this facility
So what you actually want is a petition to stop charging people who can't be bothered to spend time reading and shopping around.
You are wasting you time - and everyone else's.
Goodbye.0 -
Off topic here but do the credit reports include bank/credit card account no's?0

£2 to get a copy of the data they hold on me?
Not a bad deal considering any other organisation can charge £10 under the data protection act.
Yes CRA's are a rip off. We should have free access.0 -

Does the general public REALLY need to constantly be checking their credit rating in order to make these products exist?0

I do agree that Experian are a rip off for their monthly subscription, but I currently have a subscription with Equifax.
The only reason I have my subscription is because I'm in the process of sorting my credit report out with the aim of buying a house and it's useful to have an email if something on my credit file changes. I get a copy of my credit report once a month (or more if something changes) and am generally happy with the convenience, although, as soon as we have bought a house, my subscription will be cancelled.
However, I would not even be tempted to pay anything like the price of Experian. Equifax only charge £6.99 a month compared to Experian's £14.99.
On the subject of the statutory report though, you can order one online (and view it online) with Experian but you still have to wait for them to post you a passcode which kinda defeats the point.0 -

I work full time, but I find time to do important things like checking my credit report. It takes less than 5 minutes to check the report. I can (and do!) check it whilst sitting on the toilet.
Likewise, a quick web search turns up Noddle as a provider of free credit reports, plus its been advertised in many of the major news publications by the press.0
