Takes a lot longer than I thought it would to sort stuff,(mainly to find suitable places for things I do want/need to keep) all last night and this morning to do something with the 8' long x 5' wide  pile of stuff from yesterday.
among the usual things in a bedroom were the following:
    • boxes for appliances no longer owned
    • chemistry set x2 from 12 years ago (DS1 chemistry exam)
    • 'electricity' set same DS1
    • unopened box of chocs eat by march 06:eek: Assume forgotten emergency xmas pressie
    • assorted bottles of unopened spirits/champagne:confused:
    • bills/paperwork going back to 05
    • large bag of odd socks......at least 2 snakes in that bag:D
    • assorted old birthday/xmas/valentine cards
    • packet of tulip bulbs....dont know how they got there I love gardening,
everything is now where it should be:D ....have decided to sort clothes later in the week as home needs are greater than my cupboards...and I still cant bring myself to get rid of any of my 50+ jumpers:rolleyes:

OUT.......3 bags of clothes to charity shop....they asked if they had been ironed! chemistry sets etc to friends kids, tulips to garden shed, papers..shredded to compost bin, socks to sewing cupboard...thats needs a tidy as well.

    IN.........nothing:j

tomorrow the kitchen gets it ....

 How could anyone possibly forget a box of choccies?? I think I'd be straight into them on Boxing day if I knew they hadn't been given to anyone!!

Oh and 50+ jumpers  i think I have about three jumpers, that is one thing I'm seriously lacking!

The good news is I have de-cluttered the paperwork out of the dining room.:T

The bad news is I've stuck it all in a carrier bag and plonked it down the summer house.:o

I do intend doing it. It was just that the kids went back to school today and for the first time in months, another person (sick husband/teenager house-guest/kids at home) hasn't been demanding my attention and I really wanted to clean up instead and have now cleared the desk our old pc sttod on, this is going to become 'homework area'. Paperwork will possibly be tackled tomorrow as kids are going to after school club as my college course will be on Wednesday's, but cos college doesn't start yet I have a few weeks 'hols' for me.:j

I've decluttered some of my kitchen cupboards....into 2 storage boxes under the stairs - all stuff I rarely use (and extra mugs/plates etc to encourage me to wash up more often) since ex moved out 6 months ago ;) Only put them into storage though so I can still use them if I have people round, like DD's friends for tea or something ;)

  • I'm trying the "5 things" approach to try to keep some of the clutter under control. Idea is, each day when I come in I pick up and put away just five things - either from just one room, or by finding something in the room I've just been putting something else away in, and sorting that out, and so on. I also have an ongoing project with stripping useful articles out of the massive pile of photography magazines I have accumulated - the articles get filed in a lever arch file (need another one of those now though!) and the magazines either get passed to a friend who's just getting into photography or if there's nothing left in there worth reading, thrown out. I'm going to try to do a few (ideally 5) each night until the pile is gone. Just little things I know, but hopefully enough to make a difference.

Brilliant thread, I have been dipping in over the last week and have now got up to yesterdays posts. Well done everyone :)

Hope no one minds if I join in too?

I decided to make a start over the weekend on decluttering our house. I thought the best place to start would be the childrens clothes as I always seem to be inundated with washing (7 of us in house), and I have been a bit suspicious that DD threw clean clothes into the laundry basket in her room as a way of tidying up:mad: So I spent hours sorting out the clothes and then moved onto the cupboard under the stairs that housed my huge collection of Tupperware that I have been given by various people who have decluttered it from their houses and I have been too polite to say 'No' to it, so hid it away!

    So for the weekend:

    In

    • Nothing:T

    Out

    • 5 binliners full of clothes to the Salvation Army /Air Ambulance clothes banks (Note to self - try not to keep all clothes that friends give you as hand-me-downs, pass some on!!)
    • 3 binliners of various Tupperware boxes/tubs/jugs (Note to self, you have enough tubs, don't take in others junk!)
I'm going to start decluttering the kitchen today, it did feel good to get rid of the clutter over the weekend - I'm a born hoarder, so this is a new feeling for me!!

Wow Well done old Mcdonald I am really impressed!!

My decluttering works in dribs and drabs!

In the last few months I have
sorted through and tidied up all the craft stuff (twice!)
    sorted out a book shelf
sorted out spare room (so people could actually sleep in it!) Sadly needs doing again as I keep putting stuff in there!! Where does all the stuff come from!!!
Sorted out garage which was a major feat!

Aiming to sort through present cupboard once kids are back at school as I'm sure I have more Christmas presents then I can actually find!!

I was thinking last night about where I am in % terms of de-cluttering. Though the paper-work is my only main hot-spot now, there are still places which still need a little bit of sorting out. This list is purely for de-cluttering, I am not counting if the room is currently untidy:p

DD's bedroom - 95% done, recently re-decorated, it loses points only cos I will be swapping her short-sleeved tops for long sleeved ones by the end of the month and putting away for next year any that will still fit, charity bagging/recycling the others. She has also outgrown some of her dressing up clothes, but I didn't dare get rid whilst it was still school hols.

DS's bedroom-85% done. Needs his out-grown toys/dvds getting rid of, and his sister's toys putting back in her room.

Our bedroom- 60% done. I leave Mr S's personal stuff down to him, which is why this room gets a low score. Bedding and towels live here at the min, but we will be having a linen cupboard built over our stairs to accommodate them. They will be de-cluttered then. There is also my paperwork from college. Now I know I have passed my exams I will be getting rid of a lot of it.

    Bathroom - 100% done.

    Hall/stairs/landing 100% done

    Living room 100% done

Dining room - 90% done. Was a lot lower before I moved paperwork out of there yesterday:D . Handful of items left in 2 cupboards

Kitchen - 90% done. Again few items left in 2 cupboards.

    Downstairs toilet - 100% done

    Conservatory - 100% done
