I feel as though I haven't got very far since the last couple of times I posted on this thread. I still haven't touched my last remaining hot spots, due to a combination of illness, going away, kids on easter hols and re-decorating.

On the plus side, today I have given some school polo shirts and school dresses that don't fit my kids to mums in school playground. And I SHOULD be able to get back on track this week.:T

Thanks Pigpen. I think I'll just agree to sell things I know something about, so that I can be sure they are correctly described. Amazon doesn't sound like it will work for me then! Thank you for that useful tip!

I have taken some books and the very last of my CDs to a charity shop today.

My chest of drawers has just left the house at last!!! I think I have been posting about that ever since I joined this thread. I'm so glad I persevered and didn't just send it to the tip.

Picked up some parcel paper which was reduced because it had one small tear on it! Also got some free packing boxes from the shop. What a great day of results! :D

i'm waiting to hear about the things i've listed on freecycle. I'm hoping to book friday off work so that i can tackle the bedroom, the last bad spot.
  • Got rid of an item through freecycle today, it took an age for us to shove it into the car though:D

  • Hi missyg and bails, was browsing OS whilst waiting for OH to stop coughing before I go up to bed - we're both suffering from a cold at the moment - and saw your posts re selling on Amazon.

As you can see from my sig I am a 'die-hard' Amazon seller, my opinion is not the same as pigpen's (sorry pigpen).

Amazon is much easier to list on than Ebay and costs nothing until you actually sell (unless you are a pro-seller like me). When you list an item the last page before you finalise your listing tells you exactly how much you will get from the sale. I would not get too hung up on how much Amazon charges in commission/fees/etc just look at how much you as the seller will receive and deduct the cost of P&P to see if you are in profit, if so, then the item is worth listing.

To get the real low-down on selling on Amazon have a look at the first 2 posts on this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=598632

    Some examples are:

Book priced 1p, buyer pays £2.76 (standard postage £2.75), seller receives £1.41

Book priced £1, buyer pays £3.75, seller receives £2.23

Book priced £5, buyer pays £7.75, seller receives £5.54

Before listing, you should know how much a book will cost to post, otherwise you could lose out big-time, some coffee table books cost a lot to post.

Another great benefit of Amazon is that you don't have to chase or wait for payment, when a sale comes through the buyer has already paid Amazon.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask either on this or the Amazon thread, I'll do my best to answer. There are also other Amazon die-hards on the Amazon thread that will be able to answer.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
OH has noted down the late night openings for the refuse/recycling tip near him so he can gradually clear away the junk in the garage.

Estate agents are primed now, I got a set of 4 keys cut for them (£24!!!! )

OH painted the loft door as it was covered in black fingerprints and gave the kitchen ceiling another coat of paint.

Hopefully it will be all systems go for putting the house on the market!

I am seriously considering freecycling an armchair that MiL gave to us. It is huge and doesn't really go with the rest of the suite. I can't think where we would put it in my house, so I think it is a prime candidate.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

    FFM :)

Exactly.. therefore the fees work out WAY higher than ebay fees.. which is what I said.. therefore if you are selling things for a few pence.. which in order to compete with most of the big time sellers who bulk buy for pence a copy or you have books which are thin/light but sought after you don't have a cat in hells chance of making anything...

if you sell a book for 1p.. you receive £1.41.. you have postage to cover out of that because as a seller you don't get the full postage cost, which you should! postage would be about £1.15 with recorded delivery... so you get 26p for your book!!! definitely not worth the bother.

Also.. I sold a vhs video.. 25p for the video.. they charged £3 (ish) postage.. of that I got 50p.. plus 25p for my video.. postage was 98p.

It was about then I decided not to bother! I have never been out of pocket selling on ebay.

Thanks for all the useful info about Amazon, I'll head over to the Amazon thread too. We have a Book Barn fairly near us where it's 50/50 so that might be a better bet?
Been poorly so no more to report yet... some great work going on in other people's houses though, well done!

How did the new work contract go Angela? Hope all is well. You were on here early this morning :D

Hello FFM nice to see you here! Thanks for those examples. My books are the hardback coffee-table type and although they are popular titles (Michael Palin's various BBC series) they are not selling on ebay at all even at rock bottom prices. I'm inclined to think they wouldn't have a chance on Amazon either. What's your gut feeling as an experienced seller?

Bails sorry to hear you haven't been well. I've not heard of Book Barn?

I'm having trouble concentrating today because of an outside issue affecting my house, so I don't think I will get much done as there's a lot of distraction. I don't want to start my tax return submission until I know I can do it in one sitting.

Good luck with your efforts today folks!
