Would the same principle work for making that "water" stuff you see in vases of fake flowers?

I've got some posh looking fake flowers and some lovely vases and was wanting to get that "water" effect in the vase... would I use the same mixture but without the essential oil and the colouring??
  • can you use boiles water for this instead of distilled water. Also, what is distilled water? Sorry if being thick........

You get free distilled water if you have a condensing tumble dryer, the water in the container is distilled..... also if you defrost a fridge you can use the water from the ice. suppose you could also use melted ice cubes after all they are frozen water?????

how long do they last for?
  • I don't know where you'd get distilled water from (mine's probably going to come out of my condenser dryer), but the gelatine is the stuff you set jellies with. Unless I've read wrong, and end up with a fragrant trifle instead of a gel freshener :)

I'm going to try this with yellow colouring and Citronella essential oil since I've already got all the stuff, so hopefully mine will have bug-repellent properties too. Thanks for yet another great idea - you lot are full of them :)
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!

    Hi all

You should be able to get distilled water from a big supermarket - if they have it it'll be near the laundry stuff. It's there because it's recommended for use in steam irons - avoid/lessens them getting crusted up with limescale. Failing that, Halfords or a similar car place would have it. It's put into some types of car battery I think (or else I am going batty).

The gelatine is available in the supermarket and would be near the flour or other baking products. There is also a vegetarian version. Neither are flavoured or perfumed.

I still haven't tried making these yet (should get my lardy butt off MSE and do something...) so can't say how long they last for. I think it's mentioned somewhere further back in the thread.

Nope, you're not going batty :D ...you're correct in saying it can be used for batteries and that it can be bought from Halfords.

I got some last week for my car!
