Not so much on the breathalyser issue, but this relates to other problems that could come up, as the UK has opted out or so it seems from this new directive:

Do not forget your warning triangle, extinguisher and fluorescent vests as well.0

No it's not yet a legal requirement just a recommendation that a first aid kit and fire extinguisher are handy. You will need a warning triangle & high Vis for everyone and a spare set of bulbs.0

Make sure by NF rated breathalysers if you are travelling to France as the alcohol limit is different to the UK.
You can get them from a alcohol and drug charity Swanswell.

jetting off to France in a month, time to get all the bits and bobs again,
I gave dad the breathalyzer last time to keep, but we are flying and hiring a car, would just take dad's spare but is it worth the risk for the 1 1/2 hour drive till we get to him or would you buy another to keep in the hire car.0 -
You don't need a breathalyser, there is no penalty for not having oneChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0

Breathalysers - It is compulsory for drivers of all motor vehicles including motorcyclists but
excluding mopeds, to carry a breathalyser in their vehicle while travelling in France.
The breathalyser has to be a certified by the French authorities, showing an ‘NF’ number.
The official text states that one unused certified breathalyser must be produced. We
recommend that two single-use breathalysers are carried, so if one is used or damaged you
will still have a replacement to produce.
We have received notification of the indefinite postponement of being fined for not carrying a
breathalyser (An on the spot fine of €11 was due to be implemented on 1 March 2013).
So their own pdf says you must have one.0 -
Q. What's the consequences for not having one?
A. There are noneChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0
