    hey welshbob,

have you tried the firmware from the webpage i have written and see if it helps. im pretty sure its fixed my problems of the FF plus the bitstream. i havent noticed any freeze or noise with my one after 10mins, and i have no idea about ur 4th problem as i have never gone into that much detail with divx or xvid films, yet :)

let me know how it goes.

Encountered the first real problem with mine (I can forgive occasional dodgy subs for now)

Tried playing some xvid files for the first time and there was sound but no picture whatsoever, just the yamada screen. Very annoying, I assume its the packed bitsream problem, but others have said that that problem results in jerky playback, not complete lack of visuals.

Can anyone advise? I'm now unsure what to do because I thought V1 firmware was supposed to fix this problem, and if it does why bother modifying every xvid file? Seems like a chore.
  • I've got my player through and it's seems ok so far. But I am having problems updating the firmware. I've burnt off about 5 discs with the .iso file on (following the instructions), but every time I put one in to the player it says it's loading for about 20 seconds and then says 'No Disc'. I don't really want to keep wasting discs as i'm obviously doing something wrong.

So I was wondering if anyone would kindly be able to send me the disc they used (or a copy of it) so I can try with that? I will obviously pay for the postage and for the actual disc, I can do this through Paypal or a cheque.

So if anyone can help me (i'd be really grateful) then please e-mail me at darrensmith40 AT hotmail DOT com.

    Cheers

Have you tried burning at a slow speed. At fisrt I couldnt get a cdrw to read at 24X but when burnt at 4x it worked fine.

  • Thanks, I've tried that, but it doesn't seem to work.

This sounds like a duff codec. Some files are encoded with non standard codecs, reencode with virtual dub.

If you want to find the codec used in a file use the gspot program. Install and then right click the file and select open with Gspot. Generate a report and post it here. It sounds like the codec used is not supported.

Perhaps it doesnt like the media, many dvd players/dvd recorders prefer certain brand. Have you tried another brand?

I knwo it works because it worked for me and I know two other people who have the players and updated no problem.

If you are trying to put some DivX/Xvid files onto a disc to watch on the viewer, create a data disc, copy the AVI files over and burn.

The player is actually a complete computer system running Linux on a single chip (SOC = System on a Chip) the DVD drive in the player is one for a PC with an IDE cable. The player can read any UDF format disc.
If you are burning a VCD etc then select this option in your burning software. I'd recommend Nero. The one that comes with Windows XP is a cut down Roxio. To test your ISO try mounting the ISO as a filesystem (Linux / Mac) or use Daemontools on Windows.
    http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/download.php
Install and reboot then select the DT icon from the system tray and select mount image and select your ISO. DT will then make the ISO appear as a virtual CD/DVD etc on your PC. A good way of testing ISO or BIN files wihtout having to burn onto disk. Also get some CD/DVD RW disks so you can erase and reuse after mistakes!

Theres a good set of instructions to burning firmware on media using nero, which will guide you through the process on umax web site, the link of which has already been posted.

I had seen that one but hadn't tried it yet as wasn't too hopeful as it was based on the Umax V1 firmware (Umax V1 and MTZ V1 had the same problem). But I gave it a go and have sucessfully watched my first Xvid film all the way through !!!!

Thanks for the help, now just hope someone sorts out the Xvid GMC issue.

    Cheers
