  • Mine still hasn't arrived, even after taking into account the holidays seems excessive and probabily a excuse to delay delivery. Won't be dealing with these jokers again.

I wouldnt say 6 days or less excesive delivery time, given that 4 days were down to holidays and weekend. I ordered mine on 23rd and came today on 29th.

My player arrived this morning. It included a piece of paper with instructions on how to make it multi-regional which are a little misleading. To get the desired '0' you don't press the '0' key; the screen is set at Region 2 so scrolling with the down arrow on the keypad takes you to '0' then press play to ok it. You also go in to the settings to set the scart to RGB as well. (yes it does have a scart!) I haven't tried the firmware and I can't say that I'm going to either; I doubt that a new download is going to alter the picture quality which is actually quite average. On recommendations I bought the Skyworth player the other week but compared to my 3 year old Philips the picture quality was horrendous. So the Skyworth went back. The picture quality on this Yamada is slightly better but only just. And the disc tray has to be seen to be believed; it's so flimsy it's as thin as a cigarette paper! I've learned my lesson the hard way; this Yamada is probably going back and I'll wait that little bit longer for quality players to come out that do DivX etc. for not much extra cash. If you want something that'll play anything; and I mean anything then this is the player for you. But if your first priority is picture quality then look elsewhere.

I have one of the skyworths from WHSmith a while back, and believe that is essentially the same as a Yamada 6600

Its true the disc tray is thin, but I've found that as long as you're careful its fine. In terms of picture quaility, have you tried using a good scart lead rather than the one they send you? I'm using my own scart lead, and the picture quality is great for DVDs and Divx

007 they dont send you a scart with the 6700, but I take your point about the scart sometimes scart leads/connections can cause problems.

Got mine on Tuesday, very happy with it. After instaling some firmware that is. Very confusing because theres so much I had to absorb.

Basically theres 2 versions, version 1 should be installed for average users I think, allows you to fast forward and rewind (cos otherwise it crashes/freezes/goes out of sync!) which is what I had. Ignore the link you get in the box, check out the forum somewhere in this thread (thanks for that!)

I believe V2 improves the displaying of seperate subtitle files (i.e: .srt/.sub files) - I dont have many of these so I haven't used it. It displays one of my subbed films just fine, but the other one is pretty unwatchable.

Theres also a ream of non-official firmwares which are supposedly better but are more confusing still and I wont bother until they release a V4 which they say will fix everything the official ones do (and more) in one go. Using the firmware itself is quite nerve wracking, mainly because theres so many stories about how the player can 'die' if you do it wrong or theres a power surge or whatever other reason, if the process is interrupted you're screwed! Thankfully it was quick and harmless.

All in all I'm satisfied with my divx player, wanted one from day one but it was a long wait until compatibility and reliability and price were such that I was willing, but I'm very happy and would even replace the other players in my house with them. Good price - very happy. Recommended although be aware that Yamada have supposed finished production of this model and have released the successor. However I use divx heavily for anime and stuff and I've no qualms as long as it doesnt break down soon.

Overscan is annoying though - anyone know a cure/workaround/tv which doesn't suffer from it?)
  • I wnet to look at buying this as DivX is good format to have and the price is now £59.99 Delivered!

In the past Ive had problems with corrupt Divx files which stop at certain points & refuse to continue when played on my computer. Has anyone experienced this with the Yamaha? Presumably some players would just play the file and not show a picture for the corrupt bit.
    thanks

I bet you clicked on the play.com link and not loaded link. I deleted that link to save confusion it.

The problem with DivX is that there is so many variables it is virtual impossible to have any player to support everything, firstly there's bitrate the higher the amount the more power hungry it is on a processors, then there's ac3, again very demanding on bandwidth and cpu. Also Qpel again very demanding. If you have a combination of all 3 then many divx players cant cope.

It all depends on who did the mpeg4 and how if they did use to much off all these resources.

If you want a player to play everything without any problems then you are asking a lot, perhaps reasonable pc would fit the bill with tv out, or modded Xbox.

But then you cant go wrong for £35 for a players, at the end of the day its your choice.
