MSE News: TalkTalk raises prices for millions

  • As TalkTalk require line rental with broadband service, as do all companies operating in 'LLU' areas, then the rise in line rental charges will enable customers to move their broadband as well as their phone line. After all, to refuse to allow you to move broadband provider as well would effectively increase costs for customers, somthing that Ofcom would frown up.

Personally, as a distributor for Utility Warehouse, I will be busy for the next few days sorting out people who were previously tied in to TalkTalk, as our combined packge has been getting cheaper whilst others are getting more expensive:j

I'm getting a strong odour of spam from the last post...UW has it's own dedicated thread for this reason.

  • Talktalk have only recently unbundled my local exchange, (cutting off my phone service for nearly six weeks!), but raising my miserable 0.5 to 1.5 Mb speeds to a more acceptable 5Mb plus.
My 'bundle' cost also went down because they previously charged me more for my line when they had to rent it from BT!
I was with Tiscali for years, and I have neither signed a new contract with Talktalk nor received notification that using the recently improved service constitutes a renewal.
As changes of ownership and service occurred, I have carefully avoided requesting them to set up anything new, insisting that they continue with my original service or its current equivalent. I am now many years outside the original contract period.
Does anyone know if that means I can leave at any time without penalty?

I'm in the same position. I was a Tiscali customer for years and then Talk Talk took over. Haven't changed the package at all, but I only have broadband with Talk Talk. I have emailed them via their website when my "contract" expires (I can't believe I have a "contract" with them as such as I didn't sign anything with them either) but I am still waiting for a reply. I emailed them Tuesday night - they say they aim to answer all enquiries within 24 hours but I haven't received a reply as yet. If I don't receive a reply today I will email them again, and will ask for my MAC CODE whilst I'm at it!

I've paid up front, but that was at the old rate. I'm presuming the new rate will be shown on the bill and just eat into my advance payment a bit faster. :(

The one off upfront payment of £114 covers you for ONE year.
You won`t be affected until you renew again.

You do have a contract with them, because you have used the service. TT purchased your contract from Tiscali. No signature is necessary-a verbal or deemed contract has exactly the same validity as a written one.
Your contract never expires, it just reaches the end of it's minimum term.

  • i know someone who as talk talk broadband and line rental, i take it they can only cancel the line rental and not broadband as well since it doesnt affect broadband? am i right in thinking this?

If you have TalkTalk and you don't want to pay the increased line rental for it, you can cancel your contract and go elsewhere, providing that the increase is "detrimental" to you. Your disconnection will include ALL services including broadband although this can be provided without line rental being provided by TalkTalk. However it would probably be more beneficial to have a consolidated service with whoever you choose to have as your provider.

MAC (Migration Authority Code) numbers are only for the transfer of broadband/data services and ensure that your email and internet ID remains unchanged.

If you are disconnecting because you're just not satisfied with Talk Talk as a provider, then you can be charged either the remainder of your contract (which is normally a two year period) or £70, whichever is the lesser amount (OFFCOM rules and reg's).

Used to work for CPW so sold a LOT of TalkTalk packages (ethically of course!!!) and do know the "swings & roundabouts" as it were !!!

YES you can leave without penalty, although having continued to use the service may constitute another contract period (they are slippery Bu**ers!) However just to clarify - it is not TalkTalk who unbundle your Local Loop. It's BT Openreach who are subcontracted to TalkTalk and maintain all phone and data lines ! Call and ask if you out of contract and therefore able to move supplier without penalty - it should be very easy!

Incorrect, BT OR maintain the local loop, but the telcom or ISP place their own equipment in the local exchange in order to send the call or data via their own national network, rather than via BT's network.

Thanks for the info. So does that mean that having stayed with them for the full "initial term" I can leave them without penalty?
