I am pleased to see so many responses to the Road Angel debacle
I have sent my objection to their proposed withdrawal.
I see no reason technically why they cannot transfer the support software onto their new server, that way we will all be happy. They did this when Windows 7 came out so why not now.
Road Angel obviously feel that they can open up a lucrative revenue stream by withdrawing this
I agree that "lifetime" means lifetime so Road Angel should not be allowed to implement this withdrawal of service
I would support a legal challenge

I have just received a reply and basically we can keep making objections but the same conditions apply as regards to the Gem offer !!!

I have just contacted Watchdog about this matter and will let you know if they contact me ?
• We all have to send letters and see what the outcome is. Then we all need to stand united and get as many of us classic people to stand together. I wish they could transfer all the service update to my server as I would gladly offer the services of my quicker server for free!!!. But its not about that its about them trying to gain more money. Since I purchased my units back in early 2002 I have loads of offers etc from them all promising me a better unit but with the yearly subscription. I also purchased a newer unit a couple of years back but ended up selling it on ebay, yes it looked slightly better and was smaller, but false triggered more, and only offered what my old classic unit did. I have always stuck with the classic from then on.

As per several others, I've responded by noting that they are trying to introduce the term "reasonable lifetime", when of course there is no mention of this in the contract or any of the marketing material.

As to options available to me/us, I've said that if they do terminate the service, then I'll be obliged to purchase an alternative product and (lifetime/successive annual) subscription, and either they pay for this or I'll see them in Small Claims Court.

Will be writing as well as emailing....
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

What is a "reasonable lifetime?" Seventy, eighty years?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

If there were sufficient numbers of us interested then we could get over the small claims limit and recover costs assuming we win. Our remedy would appear to be in specific performance i.e. forcing RA to provide lifetime cover. In terms of damages (assuming they did not provide lifetime cover) then this would be the costs of comparable cover over a lifetime so we would have to obtain evidence from another provider as to costs or indeed the costs that they are seeking to impose that we would otherwise not have incurred.

I entered my contract on 31 March 2005 and whilst I have the receipt, I am still looking for the actual contract terms. Does anyone have a copy?

Not a RA user.

Just taking a common sense London Omnibus approach.

Most products that have "lifetime" guarantees are often "reasonable" and time limited. A court would take that into account more so for technology based products and services IMO.

Is the original entity you contracted with solvent? Is there anything to pursue?

Thanks and that is a fair question. Thecompany appears to have posted a proportionately large loss to turnover on the last available year's accounts and whose financial stability assessment refers to its holding company also registered at the same address and whose financial stability assessment carries a category D "very high risk" extreme caution summary.

The point that you make is genuinley noted. But we are not talking about a guarantee here, it was a lifetime subscription that was sold and bought. Unless the original contract terms make it clear, "lifetime" may also be open to interpretation, whilst lifetime support can only be provided by a company that cna cointinue to trade.
