I think I have 2 defaults - one for a catalogue which was paid off about 7 years ago now and one from HSBC which I cleared off in September 2008...I am not aware of any others - but I suppose if I do I shall find out very shortly!

The account I held was Barclays cash card account, and when I opened it I think I could either have a cash machine card or a debit card (I actually believe I got sent both but can't really remember!).

My account was given around 14 days notice - but my debit card was suspended immediately. I think when I went into the bank they got confused as to whether I needed to remove my funds immediately as obviously they wanted to retain my card - so I think many of the problems I have faced have been to do with mis communication.

Is it normal that in circumstances such as this that debit cards get suspended?!

What about your shop you were starting did it ever start and were any debts left there .

Didn't open one yet :) still waiting for the money (i had a pecuniary legacy which is what these cheques came from and am awaiting the residuary! Has taken alot longer than previously thought!) and a premises (the one we were going to take didn't have permission to be a retail unit and when we asked the agents to confirm they never got back to us and we saw it being advertised at a higher rent!)! Although I think I got alot of advice from that thread and luckily in the beginning of feb I got a job so am not so worried about jumping in, as it can stay in the bank now for as long as it takes! (assuming I have a bank to put it in!).

I haven't had any letters regarding them, they are not in any arrears at all, and paid by direct debits every month at a fixed payment which is £30 for 1 and £15 for the other!.

So are you saying there is an arrangement in place? Did you at some point contact them, claim hardship, and ask for a repayment regieme you could afford?

Nope no arrangement. My minimum payment is x and I doubled it to a fixed amount! I don't use them anymore very often so I have just done that to finish them and get rid!

The OP was allowed to withdraw all the funds in the account so it's not going to be anything to do with fraud or ML.

I disagree, my OH had his account closed due to fraud as a cheque bounced, money still went in and we have recently received the SAR where someone put a note to say they were lifting the block/closure to allow him access to his money.
it has taken 12 months to get this SAR so be prepared for a battle OP

I think if they do think I have committed fraud they are ridiculous for letting me take the money out? I mean if they suspect it why not make me leave my money there whilst they investigate? It doesn't give me much confidence in the banking system! At least your OH could still get his money, has it caused him any problems?
