Presumptuous maybe, obviously someone will struggle to get a full current account if debts in the past have gone unpaid or left a bank with a debt then yes people will say its hard.
Opening a normal basic account unless someone has gone BR fair enough, so the way it is the banks are picking up descrepencies on the OP's credit files.
Opening a full current account to someone who pays their bills it's very easy FACT.

Thanks nope...never left a bank with a debt! My debt is also alot better that when I originally opened the account. Find it all very strange but have sent off for my credit files this morning.

Just have a good old look through it mate it might be something really silly that can be adjusted straight away.

There were some threads last year where people who had good credit rating were having credit cards closed for no apparent reason. This may not be anything you did or did not do.
It is entirely possible the bank changed there scoring criteria for this account. When you opened a new product it gave them the opportunity under the T & C's to do a credit search AND apply this new score/criteria to all your accounts.

From the banks POV basic account holders and in fact those that hold accounts where they don't pay a fee, nor use an overdraft or incur charges don't make profits.

Just another view that it may be the bank who have changed position not necessarily something the OP has or hasn't done.

I would still progress with the complaint, if nothing else the person in the bank who said all the money HAD to be taken straight away was totally out of order. Surely it is unreasonable to give any less than a months notice of account closure. If its fraud etc surely the account would be suspended straight away and anything else should get a full month to sort out.

Furthermore, I just wondered where I stand with my credit cards - trying to appease myself perhaps but if barclays suspected me of wierd transactions would they not have closed my credit cards down also?

You never mentioned credit cards before in all this. You said all you had was a basic bank account with a visa debit card, no cheque book, no overdraft. Are they from Barclays as well? Are they closed as well or not?

Are your defaults still on your records do you think?

They are indeed barclaycards! One classic visa (I think that is what it is called) and one platinum (which was my old egg card!) I haven't had any letters regarding them, they are not in any arrears at all, and paid by direct debits every month at a fixed payment which is £30 for 1 and £15 for the other!.

I thought I had already mentioned them sorry! Although perhaps when my statements come through there shall be a letter in there? I don't know! Will have to wait and see I suppose!

You seem determined to create a smoke-screen to detract from the bank's conduct, yet the quote above is accurate and relevant to the OP, not credit cards.

The OP said something else in an earlier post... "the reason [given] is that I no longer meet the criteria for the account". Although there has been forum speculation of fraud or money laundering, eventually it was stated that approx 10 days notice was provided (so not money laundering), though with p*ss poor adviser advice about dealing with imminent direct debits.

Given the account *appears* to be a Basic bank account, perhaps you could say what Basic bank account "criteria" you think has to remain met for continued use?

I think I have 2 defaults - one for a catalogue which was paid off about 7 years ago now and one from HSBC which I cleared off in September 2008...I am not aware of any others - but I suppose if I do I shall find out very shortly!

The account I held was Barclays cash card account, and when I opened it I think I could either have a cash machine card or a debit card (I actually believe I got sent both but can't really remember!).

My account was given around 14 days notice - but my debit card was suspended immediately. I think when I went into the bank they got confused as to whether I needed to remove my funds immediately as obviously they wanted to retain my card - so I think many of the problems I have faced have been to do with mis communication.

Is it normal that in circumstances such as this that debit cards get suspended?!
