    Sorry I misead your OP. Thought you said you had a visa debit card and a cheque book but you said you had a visa debit card but not a cheque book. But it doesn't matter ... there would still be criteria for a visa debit card.

    The bank will have retained a copy of the cheques so they will be able to see whatever is written on them and who the drawer is. But these cheques aren't for especially large amounts .... the cheques, in themselves, shouldnt be causing this especially if the bank has given you the money with no problems.

    What sort of account did Lloyds/TSB offer you?

    Lloyds tsb either silver or basic..

    The children's savings account is linked to my account so probably why! I passed a credit check with lloyds with no problems...don't see their problem! I wasn't applying for credit?? The terms and conditions in relation to a credit rating state...'where there is a risk that monies will not be paid back' what monies?? I do not owe them a penny!! And to do it with immediate affect?? What the hell is that about? Tone told I must withdraw all my funds is dispocablr

    Sorry dispicable!! The woman I spoke to in the bank informed me that the account I had was a basic bank account for people on benefits or those who had been declared bankrupt as they generally pay money in and spend it (pretty sure everyone does that!!)...I am not either of those things...if the reason is my credit rating I should have been informed that an application OFFERED to me by a staff member could result in my banking facilities already in place being withdrawn. Isn't that part of the banking code, being clear and upfront???

    maybe they suspect money laundering? how much was x, and who was it payable to?

    My thoughts exactly. The other account being opened set off the alarm bells, and then they put two and two together and came up with five.

    Now they can simply cover up their mistake by not believing you.

    Study xylophone's posted link and raise a complaint focussing on the notice period. I cannot say what the bank's grounds are, other than they would have to be serious to merit immediate closure. In making any adjudication the FOS will "smoke-out" the bank's reason.

    Maybe view Barclays T&Cs section 15.3 it details reasons for immediate closure of an account. The OPs transactions appear very genuine mse has an infatuation with money laundering for some reason.

    Spoken to the ombudsman this morning who are going to raise a complaint on my behalf regarding the notice period...banks do not need to give a reason and can just close anyone's account without giving a definate reason!! I find that pretty despicable!! Now I just need to wait and see if my other account gets up and running or is also taken away and go from there! I may also go into nationwide and open up a cash builder account to be on the safe side so I have 2 accounts if this happens again!! X

    15.3 We may end this agreement, stop providing services or
    close your accounts immediately if we reasonably believe that
    you have seriously or persistently broken any terms of this
    agreement or any additional conditions including by:
    • giving us any false information at any time;
    • using (or allowing someone else to use) the account illegally
    or for criminal activity;
    • inappropriately authorising a person to give instructions on
    your account to operate it;
    • behaving in a manner (for example by abusing people who
    work for us) that makes it inappropriate for us to maintain
    your account;
    • putting us in a position where we might break a law,
    regulation, code or other duty which applies to us if we
    maintain your account.
    15.4 We may also end this agreement (and stop providing
    services and close your accounts) immediately if we reasonably
    believe that maintaining your account might expose us (or
    another Barclays Group company) to action or censure from any
    government, regulator or law enforcement agency.
    15.5 We may take action immediately to close an account or
    stop providing a service, without terminating the agreement,
    if we discover, after opening it, that you are not eligible for that
    account or service.
    15.6 When you close an account it is your responsibility to
    cancel any direct payments to or from your account. Where
    someone attempts to make a payment into an account which
    has been closed, we will take reasonable steps to return the
    payment to the sender

    Thanks stclair I think they are going for 15.5....I would say that it should state at any time after opening it, as I said I have had this account for a couple of years and do not see that that is a condition which should run along the duration of your account. The conditions relating to this account are :over 18 and being a uk resident. I have looked at the online process and asked a member of the 'online chat' if there was a credit check for this account. They responded to me that the credit check was to confirm who you were and this account was not subject to status. So I shall continue to cry over this!! Further more this account is available to those who are undischarged bankrupt, unlike any many other debit card accounts. This situation makes absolutely no sense to me in any way shape or form!!:rotfl:

    And what does 'without terminating the agreement' relate to??
