In the complaint I did on Tuesday in the bank I have asked for a reason why my account was closed! If they don't give me the clause I do not know what I am going to do!

Not to tell you the clause would be a good result because you can easily exploit that with the Ombudsman (without the clause the action cannot be represented to the Ombudsman as not being "improper reason").

IMO there is a particular circumstance to exploit. There is a "presumption of acceptance" for Basic bank accounts, except in defined circumstances. I am unconvinced that there are any grounds for closing a well conducted Basic bank account. Might be worth formally discussing that with the Money Advice Service. Also make sure it is clear in the Ombudsman case file that it was Basic bank account which was closed.

Did you ask about Subject Access Request (or was that another thread)? I always recommend a full SAR in these circumstances. Costs you £10, the bank an administrative fortune and there is always the chance they will shoot themselves in the foot either by "too much":D information or too little:(.

What really appalls me about this matter is a bank forcing a young female customer to withdraw £2,200 in cash and carry it out into the street. That seems like very unreasonable behaviour.

If your account is with Falcon Fraud at Barclays then they believe your card has been used to commit fraud and they have stopped it before the transaction got through but for some reason they seem to think you are some how involved in the fraud. This is all from what I have learned about risk assessment in authorising card transactions.

Have you had any problems with your card before this happened, has it trigger a fraud alert with transactions being declined and them calling you to see if the transaction was genuinely you? If so, did you intiate the transaction or was it someone else attempting to use your account?

I did ask about the SAR - and I am definitely going to send one off! Most definately after you told me that it will cost them money!

Never had anything like that :( I dont know if my account is there - that is where my complaint has been sent to? I did call up the complaints number and ask what the hell that was about (politely!) - and she told me that was the department where all complaints regarding account closures go to - not sure I believe that but they are hardly going to tell me that I have been suspected of fraudulent activity I suppose!

With regards to them making me take out all the cash - I added that to my complaint on the phone when I called up about the complaint destination - and she told me on the phone that that shouldnt have happened - I told her that it did and she did apologise!

Furthermore, I just wondered where I stand with my credit cards - trying to appease myself perhaps but if barclays suspected me of wierd transactions would they not have closed my credit cards down also?

The OP was allowed to withdraw all the funds in the account so it's not going to be anything to do with fraud or ML.

trying to get a basic bank account these days is like trying to get a bloody credit card.

Its a scandal the way banks are treating people. I cant even open a savings account never mind a basic current account.

It's actually very very easy to open a full current account up, people only think its hard if someone has maybe had debt problems or ignoring debts in the past, but to a normal person who pays their bills on time it's just like getting a blockbuster card.

Can you please say on here whether you have ever left a bank with a debt at all?
There is a reason why a business does not want to have certain people as customers - I think you know why?

I agree with this especially with banks bending backwards these days to get new customers.
Something has to be lurking on ones credit file to be turned down and money is on what yourself has said which is maybe the OP has done a runner from a bank with a dept most probably Being an overdraft.
