realised after I had renewed with autoaid that I had breakdown cover through a new bank account so rang to cancel. It was a weekend, the payment hadn't been processed but they took it anyway. They say they can't refund money to a credit card and I've twice been told "the cheque is in the post". They subsequently admitted that the first time they said that they were lying and surprise, surprise the "second" cheque has yet to arrive.

Going through Lloyds complaint procedure and judging by what has happened to date will end up with their regulator.

Actually had to call out the breakdown cover through the bank and they were fine. Worth paying for a bank account with travel, phone and breakdown insurance.

Usual con with the AA breakdown renewal.

Paid £34 for basic cover last year, this year's renewal £54. Rang up and they very quickly dropped it to £39.99. Still a nearly 20% increase, good bye AA. Getting cover with Green Flag for £19 with £5 cashback. Wonder why these companies love autorenewal so much !

Can't believe some people just renew or pay hundreds for cover. I know some policies cover more but they sound an enormous rip off. Doubtless i'll need to switch from Green Flag next year (probably for the AA !) but that seems the most cost effective way to get cover each year.
  • About 8 years ago I had a breakdown cover where you joined, paid a small fee (?) and then paid if and when you had a breakdown. Anyone know what that was/something similar?

My car is 18 years old but only has 51000 miles and is in good condition. I only drive it out of town here 2x year. Any ideas about the best/cheapest breakdown for me pls?

For the last few years I have used Quoteline direct that covered me for the UK and couple of short European trips I would make.

However now that my car is now over 16 year old any suggestions on my best option now for cover. I only have one car and I am the only driver.

    I see that Kwikfit would be 100 - tcb of ~ 18

    Thanks

  • I use firstcallmotorbreakdown.co.uk.

£42.50 for UK cover for a vehicle (can be any age)

Called them in the past they use local companies and was there within an hour. Unlike autoaid it is not claimback they pay.

They took me to garage near home (about 30 miles away). it includes onward journey and such

But breakdown a long way from home and you could be in for an expensive garage bill. This from there web page.
We will take you to either your Destination, your Home Address, or the nearest Garage able to repair the Vehicle; whichever option is closest to the scene of the breakdown

Hi, I am looking for personal cover and not keen on the claim back idea, so autoaid is on the back burner. Has anyone got a list of firms that do this? My vehicle is 6 years old. Thanks

GEM AA RAC.All a lot dearer than Autoaid.
  • I use Rescuemycar.com. They charge me £28.90 for full cover, but you do pay £40 each time you use them. I've used them on 2 cars for three years and have had to call them out twice (so the overall cost has averaged around £42 for each car for each of the three years). Obviously will be cheaper if you don't call them out. Service has been good both times I have called them out.
