It might be a dog-eat-dog world out there but there's a limit to what normal people find reasonable and decent. Estate agents aren't in a special category where some basic integrity should not be demanded.

I'd bitterly resent any agent who claimed they wouldn't "support" an offer: their role is merely as a conduit. If I were a vendor I'd be ruddy furious if I thought the agent was behaving in such a way. I think I'd be very happy when there was no longer a need for them and their slimy ways

It's not just estate agency it goes on in.

The agent wants to sell the property that is on the market with them therefore they will receive 2 commissions instead of just one.

Do you not think it happens with mortgage brokers? They get paid by the lender AND by the client.

I assume that you've never used or will ever use an estate agent?

Unfortunately it's rife in estate agency. It's a dog eat dog world and until people actually work in it they can't/don't understand what happens behind the telephone.

You can bleat about it all you like, but it's not an agent's job/privilege/role to 'support' or not an offer.

It's the agent's job to report to their client, the seller, on the circumstances of each offer, to advise whether or not the prospective buyer is proceedable, whether or not they've sold already, etc. and then let the seller decide for himself whether or not that's an acceptable offer.

Unless the client has specifically, in advance, requested that certain types of offer are to be rejected, the agent should be passing all offers on to the seller, not just the ones he chooses to 'support'

Someone quoted the essential point above - no discrimination against those who choose not to use the EAs own services....

In addition to this, not all buyers need to have sold their current home before being able to afford to buy a new one.

    And your point is?

The majority of posters on this forum are not drooling morons, so they will have worked this bit out for themselves from the OP's first post. But thanks for stating the obvious.

Do you not think it happens with mortgage brokers? They get paid by the lender AND by the client.

And? Just because there are other professions where absolutely no honesty or integrity is required does not make what this particular agent is up to fair or reasonable. Your having reached for another profession which can act equally dubiously as a very weak defence says rather a lot about your own integrity. Or lack thereof.

I assume that you've never used or will ever use an estate agent?

This is the only correct statement you have made in any of your posts about this subject and that was probably just a guess.

I wouldn't bother ... I am now thinking that he is trolling to make all Estate Agents look bad, when in truth the situation in the opening post makes the point in relation to a bad agent.

Having just read through this thread and seen the posts by someone that claims to be an estate agent, if as they appear to think this is normal and is common practice by their profession is it any wonder that estate agents have such a bad name and reputation and most people do not trust them to handle sales in a fair and profession manner, they are just confirming what most people think about estate agents.

Notwithstanding the undoubted integrity of some estate agents, I find it difficult to regard their industry as a "profession".

If you want to put your rose tinted glasses on then that's fine. It's not going to change what happens.

Do be fair, most sellers could not give a flying fig about how the agent sells their home, just as long as they get the best price in a reasonable time frame.

Fair enough. What the OP was saying, I believe, is that this specific estate agent was not interested in putting a bid forward (which may well be the best offer the vendors will get) unless the OP markets her own property with them. This behaviour is not in the best interest of the vendor at all.
