  • Fantastic thread- I've been reading it for hours while the double glazing man fits my new front door- i think the drilling bit is finished now thank goodness! brilliant to hear all your opinions and top tips- it has affirmed a lot of my beliefs- I won't be pressured by younger friends to buy all new stuff, frilly cutesy outfits etc- although I am planning to start off with disposable nappies then move on to washables (fortunately bubs is due near spring, so by 2 or 3 months old, it should be getting warm so I can get plenty of stuff out on the line).

Sounds like you've been doing brilliantly well with losing weight Ancasta- I'm jealous! Unfortunately I got pg before I had slimmed down very much, but I am eating very healthily and keep exercising and stuff (in fact I'm snacking on dried cranberries and toasted seeds as I type- still feeling sick quite a bit- I seem to get a whole pregnancy sickness thing.)

Hope this thread keeps going strong- it's helping so many people!:T

I am so tight I even made my own washable nappies!!!

I ran up most of the bedding from next to nothing from the oddment bin at the local fabric shop.. patchwork cot quilts are the most adorable thing ever.. and the blacnkets are just double layers of fleece.. one lasy patchwork the other plain colour.

I made little outfits which took less than an hour each to do and knitted most of the baby cardigans for less than £1 each.

I got a brand new cot for £40 on ebay.. the mattress was a new one from mothercare.. they lay on them for a long time so I wanted a good one. My other cotbed was reduced in a local shop from £250 to £100 because it was 'shop soiled' (it was dusty)

I breastfed all 8 of mine. It does not make you lose weight per se BUT it helps your uterus and muscles return to their normal state quicker.. the losing weight is a falacy... if it does make you lose weight all the better.. I stayed fat until I stopped breastfeeding then lost weight really quickly.. until I had number 6 then I just stayed fat lol. Breastfeeding also reduces the chances of them being ill especially with tummy bugs.. so you save on washing! a little! Plus those baby possets don't stink like formula ones do.

Mine wore nothing but sleepsuits until they were about 6 months old.. bit pointless dressing them up nice to be swaddled in blankets.

The best thing I found was a wrap sling as well.. easy to adapt as baby grew, very versatile and saved the need for a pushchair until baby was about 8 months old!!! Then I didn't have to buy a really expensive one.. the pliko P3 did it all for us.

Borrow stuff from friends.. just don't forget to give it back!.. crib, bath, it all helps!

Just finished reading Jools Oliver's Diary of a Honest Mum, she says she didn't dress her daughters in anything but white sleepsuits until they were 6 motnhs old (much to the horror of her friends!) and then dressed them in her baby clothes which her mum had kept & are now regarded as vintage! She also says breastfed for 8 months with each both through repeated bouts of mastitis . Now that is a money saving mum, even with her hubbys millions!

I'm on the lookout for bigger size sleepsuits too, Spud is just comming into the 18-24 month sizes (what on earth are you feeding Roo??!! He's only a week older!) & have got those but I always like to buy ahead & am struggling for 24 months plus, I am told they are sold in specialist shops but are expensive. Think maybe I'll wait & see if he is still taking his trousers & nappies off when he needs them or if I can safely put him in 2 peice PJ's!

it's the giraffe gene, i didn't realise my 6ft 2 husband has cousins who are 6ft 8

roo's height is right off the scale but it was at the top of the scale before he was weaned so i don't think his diet has much to do with it. he would happily live off chicken and fruit though and he's stocky but not fat (weight hasn't gone off the scale). perhaps if i fed him more toast his growth would slow down :D there's a moneysaving tip :rotfl:

he has a sleeping bag in his cot and he quickly outgrew the 6-18 month ones. i gritted my teeth and paid for a grobag sleeping bag that goes up to 3 years old, it's fab and i suppose roo can wear pyjamas and socks without being able to remove the socks during the night - cackle cackle! vertbaudet also make sleeping bags for up to 3 years and those are cheaper. i'll have to start looking for the winter bags now though, i bought summer weight last time.

asda sleepsuits are longer than tesco or mothercare by the way, his toes are tight in the mothercare ones but the asda ones are still long in the leg.

i went to my first NCT sale last week, have always meant to go to them but something always came up on the day (and a 9:30 start doesn't always look attractive on a saturday morning). it was fab! they had everything - equipment, clothes arranged according to size, lots of toys and books. unfortunately all the stair gates and fireguards had gone but my sister got great bargains on walkers and large fisher price toys that she'd been wanting. i got lots of clothes and it was better than buying on ebay because you can see what you're getting.

i bought a nappy changing table. my husband had been mentioning it for months (he's got a bad back) but i wasn't sure because i'd never seen one up and with roo being a giraffe and 13kg i thought that he'd be too long and heavy for one already (and they are £50 new). it's great, i wish i'd bought one (second hand of course) right at the start.

i'll be going to NCT sales from now on, the clothes are up to ten years and some of the books and toys are for older children. put your postcode in here http://www.nct.org.uk/local/events

do you mean an undersheet for when they are toilet training? i buy them for beds (it helps with asthma and eczema) from argos, woolworths etc. but haven't seen one for a cot.

i don't know about cot mattress coverings, mine is breathable and the cover comes off for washing. it's good enough for when they are sick but i think if he wet the bed the mattress would be ruined. i don't think he will be training before he goes into a bed though.

There's an independant baby shop near me that sells the winter sleeping bags for £19 so it might be worth looking in smaller shops.

Also why don't you cut the feet off the sleepsuits to get more wear out of them. Not very attractive but they'll last a bit longer.
