    Does anyone know what will be the most economical, when sending large letters first class in the future: ...
    Neither of those. For future 1st Large, its cheapest to use 2x 2nd Standard pre increase.
    This example also answers Loubylou.

    just a quick question and I feel a bit silly asking it!

    If something costs £1 (post price increase) to send, can you stick on 2 second class stamps?

    Thanks in advance.

    As I understand it, yes you can as although it says 2nd on it, it carries the value of the 2nd class stamp at the time (so 50p). This is the reason that Royal Mail suddenly started restricting the number you could buy.

    Amusing that royalmail didn't change at once, looks like someone was working late, changing the prices manually one by one :D

    Hi, I don't know if this will help people, but this is how I will be stamping up my stuff:

    (LL = Large Letter, PKT = Packet, Rec'd = recorded)

    1st = 60p
    2nd = 50p
    1st LL = 90p
    2nd LL = 69p
    Recorded = 95p extra

    1st rec'd = £1.55 = (3x 2nd) + 5p
    2nd rec'd = £1.45 = (2x 1st) + 25p /OR/ (1x 2nd) + (1x 1st LL) + 5p
    1st LL 0g -100g rec'd = £1.85 = (3x 1st) + 5p
    2nd LL 0g - 100g rec'd = £1.64 = (3x 1st) + 5p
    1st LL 101g - 250g = £1.20 = (2x 1st)
    1st LL 101g - 250g rec'd = £2.15 = (3x 2nd) + (1x 1st) + 5p
    2nd LL 101g - 250g = £1.10 = (1x 2nd) + (1x 1st)
    2nd LL 101g - 250g rec'd = £2.05 = (4x 2nd) + 5p
    1st LL 251g - 500g = £1.60 = (2x 2nd) + (1x 1st)
    1st LL 251g - 500g rec'd = £2.55 = (5x 2nd) + 5p
    2nd LL 251g + 500g = £1.40 = (2x 1st) + 20p /OR/ (1x 2nd) + (1x 1st LL)
    2nd LL 251g + 500g rec'd = £2.35 = (1x 2nd) + (3x 1st) + 5p
    1st LL 501g - 750g = £2.30 = (1x 2nd) + (3x 1st)
    1st LL 501g - 750g rec'd = £3.25 = (4x 2nd) + (2x 1st) + 5p
    2nd LL 501g - 750g = £1.90 = (3x 1st) + 10p /OR/ (2x 2nd) + (1x 1st LL)
    2nd LL 501g - 750g rec'd = £2.85 = (2x 2nd) + (3x 1st) + 5p
    1st pkt 0g - 750g = £2.70 = (3x 2nd) + (2x 1st)
    1st pkt 0g 0g - 750g rec'd = £3.65 = (6x 2nd) + (1x 1st) + 5p

    ...etc

    If people find it helpful I can write out the rest of the packet weights, standard parcels and special delivery ones, just let me know if you want me to.

    Just read this on the RM web site:

    Our scheme for customers on low incomes

    We will launch a Christmas scheme for people on low incomes to buy up to a total of 36 1st or 2nd Class Stamps in one purchase at 2011 prices – 46p for 1st Class and 36p for 2nd Class.

    The scheme will launch on 6 November 2012 and will be in place until the last posting date before Christmas for 1st Class stamps.

    People on pension credit and employment and support allowance (or incapacity benefit) are eligible for participation in the scheme.

    Eligible customers will need to provide evidence that they are in receipt of benefits, (eg, the Annual Uprating letter or the Award Notice letter from the DWP). Stamps will be available for purchase from any of the 11,801 Post Office branches. Royal Mail will write to every UK household later in the year explaining the scheme and how it works.

    Great, another benefit for the work-shy!
