The only indisputable fact is that the comparison sites provide certain figures and do not include all scenarios.

    Nige,

    That frankly is obfuscation.

You know full well that all the comparison networks have UW as just about the most expensive gas and electricity in UK.

Nobody disputes that the cashcard is very useful if you use Sainsburys etc.

However FluteplayerUK who raised this issue, pays about £24 a month for his telecoms package. Whilst he would no doubt pay more with UW for that package,(don't forget the monthly UW membership fee) it might be worthwhile to pay UW the extra to get the cashcard. Or perhaps take out the cheapest UW mobile package - same principle pay extra to get the card.

However to pay the silly prices UW charge for their gas and electricity in order to get a cashback card is a nonsense.

I've just had a phone call from UW telling me I owe them £397 for April to July 2009. However, I'm the landlady of the property and the house was empty for those three months. They tell me that 2642kw were used, but it's just not possible considering when there were 4 of us living there it took as a year to use that much.
I've been given a week to pay, and obviously I don't think I owe them.
    What should I do?

Was the electricity switched off at the mains during that period.
Have you checked the meter readings yourself.
Maybe you left something on like an immersion heater?
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • the only thing that could have been left on was the fridge, and that can't have used that much!
It's either the tenants or the management company who read the meters - I live the other end of the country now so can't do it myself. I guess the next step would be to get hold of the managment company and hope they've written down the readings and read them out backwards or something!

Well it is not a UW specific problem.

The likelyhood is the outgoing tenant misread or falsified his closing meter reading and the managing Agent just accepted his reading or assurance that he had settled the bill with UW.

The other possibility is the July reading was incorrect and the present tenant(if there is one)has misread or falsified his opening meter reading!!!

Do you know what the reading is as of now?

how much gets taken off your bills by being a salesman for UW ?
Nothing. "Distributors" get a small one off payment when signing up a customer, for each service they take. Then ongoing commission on each of their services for as long as they remain a customer. I can therefore get commission on people I signed up seven years ago. My commission is completely separate from my bill.

In your opinion. I respect that, and, I hope that you respect the fact that I have made my own decision and am happy with it.

Surely this "demand" is not the first communication you have had with the company? Did you read the meters when the tenants entered and left the property?

First thing I would do is to contact the company and discuss it with them. I hope that you get sorted to your satisfaction.

It's either the tenants or the management company who read the meters
It now sounds as though possibly your management company may be at fault. I am not sure I would trust tenants to read the meters as there is just that possibility they might not be as honest as you.

Another thought. Have the meters been read by the company's people or is it just an estimate?

So for the average user, as long as you spend £5500pa in Sainsburys you can save £2 a year. Then we hit another wall, Asda has currently 1844 products cheaper than Sainsburys, Sainsburys has only 265 products cheaper than Asda, so the £2 you thought you had saved has actually cost you a lot more in buying more expensive products.

Surely someone as allegedly minted as yourself would spend that sum on fuelling your motors? :p

You seem to be under the mistaken belief that only Sainsburys are on the UW 5% retailer list  Or is that the only way you can try and win the argument? Your remind me of someone else....

We have amassed another £50+ cashback this month and only approx half of it was as a result of Sainsburys purchases.

Here's a great example of a great non-Sainsburys 5% UW discount deal which we will be purchasing first week of December:

    http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/535486/PANASONIC-TX-P42S11B?cm_sp=FeatureEnd-_-Plasma_TVs-_-position

Most this TV will cost us is £400 once I've gotten rid of the not required free blu ray player and discs. Granted I will be using a 15% discount code that Comet kindly emailed me (along with several others, some of which will be allocated to friends). Of course this £400 figure includes the £30 we will get knocked off our UW bill. Feel free to beat this deal, KN.
