Just tried calling Aol, and am currently paying £19.99 for AOL gold. I was told they cannot offer me any discount as i receive my bb through ntl (cable). If i had a bt line they could offer me offer me a discount. The guy basically told me to get a bt line. Am not very happy as have been with AOL for the last 8 years!

Snap! I did the same last week and got exactly the same reponse. All the guy could offer was a free month as apology. Apparently Virgin/ntl will not allow aol to offer a lower price or higher speed through their line. So much for Virgin's free enterprise!

    Not any more.

Thanks to CPW taking over AOL a new "Fair Useage Policy" came into effect on 01/02/07. This has seen "heavy" users get punished with a speed cap of 50kbs, no matter what package you are on, through the hours of 18:00-23:00 every night and AOL will not contact you to inform you of this cap being in place on your connection.

You will also notice, if your capped, that out of the peak rate hours above you have a capped download rate of...50kbs. So all in all there is nothing fair about their "Fair Useage Policy". I'm currently battling with them to release my MAC code but, as all ISPs do, they aren't giving it up without a fight, no matter what OFCOM say.

I'm currently arguing with their "2nd" line, more like second rate, technical support as he is blaming the low speeds on my local exchange. Strange how until the 1st Feb I was able to download at 900kbs. They have also said that as I am under contract if I cancel early I will still have to pay the remainder of the term to leave them. So I'm currently paying £24.99 a month for 8mb BB and getting 512k speeds.

So my advice is to AVOID AOL like the plague.

How much were you downloading a month?

Well my PC is on 24/7 and I'd estimate I download/upload at least 8Gb a month, I help to run a busy car owners site. But on top of that I play quite a bit of online games, about 4 hours a week on Battlefield2, and my girlfriends laptop and my PS3 are also hooked up to my wireless network. So all in all probably only using 16Gb of bandwidth a month, if that.

A Fair Use policy means that we may introduce some form of network management against specific individuals if we feel that they are abusing their broadband usage beyond a level that would be considered reasonable. For example, using AOL Broadband 24 hours a day, every day, to continuously download large files is not a reasonable use for a residential service.
As another example, we might also manage the AOL Broadband service at peak times to ensure everyone is getting a stable, reliable connection across the whole network.

From what I have found from through google and other forums is that the capped rate is in effect on all AOL users from 18:00-23:00 not just heavy users, see the last paragraph of the quote above.

Also I know that one of my friends, who is on their Gold package, has been capped during these hours and he only really uses his PC for a couple of hours a night reading web pages, forums, emails and only really downloads the odd small files here and there. He's not anywhere near what I'd define as a heavy user lol, probably using about 1-2Gb of bandwidth a month.

I can't see AOL/CPW doing well out of this deal or the new FUP.
