So DD is 17 months old today and still not walking on her own :o

She will walk holding your hands until the cows come home but won't let go :o She does do independent steps most days but still prefers to get around on her knees which she is super speedy at :)

Thank you for sharing you stories with me I am playing the long game it seems. And will have to continue to fobb off the parents who make fun of her and how she gets around :o

My youngest took his first independent single step at 16 months.

My OH and I were both late walkers.

I wouldn't worry in the slightest. As for those that make fun of her, he who laughs last......

My eldest was the same. He crawled at 5 months, cruised at 7 months and from about 8 months we could walk all round town or across the fields holding his hand but as soon as we tried to leave go he sat down.
At 12 months he was cruising and playing with a wooden spoon when he suddenly took off across the rooom only stopping when he realised the spoon wasn't my finger.
From then on he started to walk independently but couldn't get up from the floor on his own so if he fell down he had to crawl to something and pull himself up.
It was a good few weeks before he mastered getting himself up without help though.

My daughter walked about at 23 months. Luckily she was very small for her age and so wasn't too heavy to carry on and off the buses when I needed to go out. The health visitor said "why would she want to walk when she has two big brothers to wait on her?" I think there was some truth in that because she was talking early and got her brothers to get anything she wanted.

There is indeed plenty of evidence to suggest that subsequent children walk later than first children. This is thought to be due to the fact that their older siblings ferry and catch for them. Plus they don't have indulgent first-time parents encouraging them obsessively :D

She sounds very intelligent! She has worked out that at the moment it is easier and faster to crawl, whilst still practising her walking by holding hands etc.

Don't worry, she will switch when it gets a little easier:D

Apparently i was 18 months before i started walking. Mother said i was like the Queen. I prefered just to sit there and watch the world go by.

3 of my boys walked at 12 months, one daughter walked at 13 months, the other, 15th months.

    I wouldnt worry.

If you're worried, speak to your HV.

BUT if it's any consolation, DS2 did not walk until he was 16.5 months, lazy so and so! We were convinced that he was doing it when no-one was looking, but if he saw that you'd spotted him standing unaided, he'd plonk his backside back down again. :rotfl:

Anyway, once he DID start walking, he was much steadier on his feet than the others, rarely fell over.

Which just confirms my suspicion that he was practising when no-one was looking ... for months! :rotfl:

Hi my DD2 is 16 months old and still not walking she can walk unaided did about 30 steps at the weekend and will walk holding your hand, sofa surf etc etc

She is unable to get up from the floor unaided yet so I guess we have to wait for that?

I know everyone says not to worry she will do it in her own time BUT I am worried and unsure how to help her. :o

Just wanted to know others experiences of late walkers......
Is your little one thriving in all other aspects of her development?

    Is she overweight?
    I'm not that way reclined

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

    Hello

I had a late walker and late talker in my daughter. I think it was because she was a big girl (9lb 11oz born) and could crawl sooo quickly there was just no need to learn to walk.

I haven't read the whole thread but my advice is see your GP just to reassure you. Daisy didn't walk until she was 18months old and so I went to my GP and I asked them to refer us for a scan of her hips ( I am a paediatric nurse and so a bit neurotic - ha ha). All was fine and dandy and she did eventually walk - but it was quite worrying at the time I remember.

    Good Luck xxx

Is taking steps on her own not considred walking? I have an 8 year old with hypermobility so he was v late at walking, but also all the other connected things (sitting up/crawling etc). Was your daughter on target for these?
In my day (2004, lol) 18 months was the age the professionals started to look for reasons for non-walking.
I remember that those toddler groups really highlighted the comparisons though - you have my sympathy.
