MSE News: Budget 2012: Fuel duty to rise in August

People saying they can't take public transport as it takes too long, surely if its cheaper, its better?
That's the thing. It's not really cheaper (for me at least) and it certainly isn't convenient enough to make it worthwhile. I live within 100 yards of a train station so you'd think it'd be a good idea to use it.
When I do it costs similar to what it costs me to drive in most cases but it's just so inconvenient it's not worth it.
My daily commute would be a good place to start.
Getting the cheapest return ticket to the station nearest my work costs me £10.40 according to National Rail enquiries. But then I've got a 2 mile walk to get there. The journey on the train also takes 1hr 11mins each way as I need to get a connecting train on the way there. Add the 2 mile walk onto that to get to my office and it's likely to be a further 25-30 mins. Call it 1hr 40mins each way and that'd be about right, so a total per day of 3hrs 20mins. If I drive it costs me around £10-£11 a day once I factor in road tax/maintenance/fuel/insurance so there's not really much difference. If I drive it takes me 20-25 mins each way.
3hrs+ per day on the train/walking versus 40-50 mins per day in the car for a similar cost? It's a no-brainer.
There's just no contest. It isn't even close. But what about when I get to work? I'd have to work out how I can magically teleport out to see my clients at very specific times for appointments because there's no way I could trust public transport to get me there in time. They all live in a 50-ish mile radius of the office. Many of which live out in the middle of nowhere. The arguement for public transport falls flat on its face when you have specific appointments to keep, many of which are nowhere near any form of public transport route. Cars aren't optional. They're an absolute necessity for people like myself.
Public transport would work for some people, people who live near their place of work and don't have to leave that place of work to carry out their work for instance. It doesn't work for me though, or thousands more like me.0 -

Legalise prostitution and drugs and tax these things... We'd be out of a recession and crime would be reduced!
While they're at it, burglars should be forced to have a licence and a credentials card, be forced to pay extra tax on their earnings and be licenced to operate only in areas where the rich live
Doesn't make any difference in reality, they keep banging on about paying off the national debt yet they keep spending on stupid stuff and wasting money in other areas. They keep on about things that affect the little man yet fail to do anything about things that do literally waste money.
We're one of the richest (yet poorest) nations on the planet. The government keep doing stupid things like crucifying manufacturing and engineering - things that built this country. Look at Dyson, he was literally forced out the door and despite designing stuff here his stuff is now made abroad because the government wanted to destroy it. Same goes for Rover, another point on the scoreboard for the ConEmLab bunch.
What annoys me is scenes where you see the PM and leader of the opposition together getting along fine and dandy like at the queens recent visit to parliament. They don't really give a damn about us, to them its just about taking turns in power and mugging us for their own enjoyment.
Until you all learn to vote the big three out of government this country is doomed.0 -

You pr@t.
That wasn't posted to stop the fuel duty, it was posted to show that there are other parties you can vote for beside Labour and Conservative. It was in response to someone else asking who else could they vote for. It was merely a suggestion of the first few parties that came to the top of my head and nothing more.0 -

But of course that's down to personal opinions.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
