Someone has to pay for the £40k a year tax break for the rich.

  • The problem is we will stand for anything in the county, in other countries they would be burning down the petrol stations in protest!

if the government had to run a business they would be bankrupt in under 12 months....these public school boys have no idea about the real world!
  • For people in the Scottish Borders area (anywhere near Kelso) please try the Sainsburys supermarket filling station. I filled up last week at a price of £1.369, which is 7p less than any other filling station as a minimum. This is for diesel and on a fill up of 60ltr this means a lot! It's difficult to afford fuel right now, so every saving should be taken where available.
    :T
  • Please correct me if I'm getting my maths wrong:

A 20 p per litre rise in the cost of fuel (as seen over the last 12/18 months or so) already includes approx. 3.3 p extra VAT.

How can an additional rise in fuel duty by 3 p (or effectively 3.6 p once you include VAT!) be justified?

I've said a few times, but driving is a privilege, not a right. If you want to drive, you will need to pay whatever the costs are.

People saying they can't take public transport as it takes too long, surely if its cheaper, its better?

    Your post is so flawed.

Public transport is not cheaper. Sure, one ticket might be cheaper than a full tank of petrol but add up multiple tickets, passes etc and its more expensive and you don't get to keep anything to show for it.

Then there is the lack of it. Incase you've not noticed the governments since the 60's have done everything possible to destroy our railways. The busses are now subsidised by county councils (who then start axing them because they can't afford to run them) and you're left with a Taxi. Still think its cheap? If the authorities can't afford bus services how does the nation?

Finally while driving is legally a privilege, it's also a necessity these days unless you live somewhere like india where people trade on the streets. This is the UK, pedlars are pretty much outlawed, Health and Safety means you need a licence to step out of your own front door and a PHD in biological physics to clean toilets. Where on earth are you supposed to work thats local to almost every home?

So instead of 20 minutes each way, I should spend £40 as I have to use two bus companies that don't co-operate with each other and spend 5 hours a day travelling? Also at what point do I manage to go 5 miles on the way home to help my 93 year old Father?

Isn't there a push at the moment for people to go on more UK breaks and Holidays ?

I live in Birmingham and a day trip to the nearest seaside resort is no longer affordable. No wonder they are dying off :(

More people doing weekend/day trips = more businesses staying in business and employing people :)

Am I the only one that can see this ?

Quite understand, we used to go to Southport every Sunday and buy a meal out, we now stay at home as we need every drop of fuel just to get to work.:T
  • In my view this amounts to a tax on working. There is no way I could use public transport to get to my job so I have no alternative but to use my car.
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

It doesn't matter how much cheaper it is if it takes so long that you can't get to work on time or back home at the end of the day.

The earliest I can get to work using any form of public transport is 11:00am. The latest I can leave in order to get home that same day is 3:50pm. my job requires me to be there at 9:00 most days and I may not finish until 9:00pm.

Well with people buying more vehicles with zero or low v.e.d., myself included, the shortfall has to be made up somewhere. Did anybody really think the rise wasn't going to happen anyway?
The above is NOT meant as a defence for the rise by the way!

Don't worry they have put in a clause for raising the VED on the current zero and low rates as cars are getting more efficient.

2.148 VED reform – The Government will consider whether to reform VED over the medium term to ensure that all motorists continue to make a fair contribution to the sustainability of the public finances, and to reflect continuing improvements in vehicle fuel efficiency.
