As long as Sony & other manufacturers update their phones within a reasonable amount of time, bug free - then im sure most consumers would be happy with that.

I would not say Samsung Galaxy S2 is problem free even after Samsung worked on it for 4-5 months

It make sense from the Samsung, it want people to change the phones not update old ones. No £ in updates.

Lets see if Sony and HTC can release the update problem free, both are working on the update for over 3 months.

Anyway not going to bother with discussing with someone who doesn't understand technical issues and has such a limited IT knowledge.

Sadly, no software is completely bug free.

If you have used the xperia s then you would know that even on gingerbread the phone is fast has no bugs, takes fantastic pictures has a lovely screen and the hdmi out to the TV helps :)
There is no real rush for sony to update to ICS because their interface currently is so good. However saying that it won't be long until they have ICS out there and working well.

Wow, thegoodman still as charming as ever.

At least his mother will love him ... probably ... maybe. Ahh ok maybe not.
  • Why all this arguing over this version, or that version, or the other version? iPhone killers, android killers & jelly bean murderers?

You buy a laptop from PC-shmucks, and it comes pre-loaded with XP home, or Win 7 early learning edition, or whatever the consumer friendly version of the ever popular OS is at the time, clogged up with all kinds of gumph that they want to foist upon you like Kodak print buddy and other craplets.

You get given a crappy "system-restore" disk so that when the user inevitably pushes it up their nose, wears it like a hat in the rain or drops it in the bath, they can start back from square one.

Of course anyone with an ounce of nous will format the hard drive the minute they get their new system home, install a stock version of Windows or whatever OS they choose, and then will do a lot of things, but certainly won't come onto MSE and try to argue that their computer came pre-bundled with a newer crappy restore disk than the next guy's computer's crappy restore disk.

Of course, as with all life no comparison can ever be 110% analogous, but the point remains.
Ok, phones have to use semi-specific ROM builds in order to handle the unique hardware in each phone, but I'd wager that with all the custom ROM activity and open source nature of Android, it's not hard to upgrade your OS unless you're using an iPhone, it's a pretty redundant line or argument for geeks on either side of the divide.

Not getting ant anyone in particular here, but at the concept of one person trying to attack another person's phone just because the OEM hasn't released an official update yet.
That's just silly, because as is so often the case in these smartphone arguments, the same protagonists like to take it lying down from their PC oems, but seem to think it's a line of argument to attack a smartphone oem.

Revel in the fantastic diversity of phone systems! Before long the landscape will be like all other computing is now; One or two "hardcore" OSs for those who have a job to do, and one massive bloated OS for all us consumer shmucks to buy upgrades for every 3 or 4 years.
  • I thought we were talking phones in this thread but I've been distracted by the 'ice cream sandwiches' and 'gingerbread'

Just a quick note, new and future S2 users - watch how much data you're using, we came from Blackberries to the S2. On the BB I had an unlimited plan and used about 33mb a month, on my husband's we had 500mb and didn't get close to half of it, BUT the first month with the S2, on a 750mb plan, he burned through 1.2GB of data in 10 days - there's a lot of things on it that sit connected and you have to find 'em and kill 'em, and if you don't have wi-fi at home, it sits on 3G all the time unless you stop it.

You don't need to do that with the Blackberry, it gets the mail in and sits around waiting for you to tell it to do something, you only had to remember to close the internet when you were done with it.

Old users and seasoned users will know this, but new users - mind what you're using until you get use to it.

TBH i would expect any smartphone user to want wifi at home if they dont have it
email and the likes can be configured to be manual or whatever
the advice for Android stands for everything but a BB
plus Im sure your partner had the new toy scenario
so most likely data use will drop

There are settings like auto sync & auto update that you disable and the handset will be as frugal on data as any other.
