Most people like to change device every now and than, true for computers, tv, DVD player etc.
Because you have a BMW now, next time you may want to get Ford.

Many android phones less than a year old can not be upgraded such as Sony Xperia S

Many upgrade for extra functions, to protect security holes and give the modern look.

Change in all things is sweet.

I'm not sure why you say MOST, there is no evidence of most, I still have my CRT TV Phillips 21" purchased in 1990 indeed it is only of use via a scart socket but it works and there was no need for change for change sake. That said it is in the bedroom and a LED TV is now downstairs.

The Sony Xperia S is only just making it's way to the stores and SE have already confirmed ICS is available late March early April as will the update for my Ray purchased in October.
I would imagine car people progress to a BMW marque although both will go from A-B

This clip is funny because it is quite true http://youtu.be/xSGPZENjTDU

People upgrade for a whole host of reasons

    My taste differs from yours.
I do like buying new things that I want, but don't have.
I hate changing things that I am happy with.
I hate buying new shirts and jeans when my loved ones wear out.
I hate new MS Word and Excel that I was forced to switch to.
I hate changing my PC when it starts struggling to do exactly the same job because of the bloated software.

The Sony Xperia S is going to have android 2.3 when released not android 4.0 released around nov. 2011. After 5 months Sony can't release the phone with new android 4.0, this is the high end phone so called iPhone killer, sim free is around £500. The android 5 is coming out soon, how long is it going to release the update?

It was announced late last year that the Xperia would have ICS late March early April 2012, I can assure you the Xperia S was not available to consumers until very recently, the handset was never advertised as an iphone killer ( although viewing here http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4212&idPhone2=4369) shows that the handset was released Feb 2012 at MWC.
Has a larger screen if that is a users thing, however more importantly than that is that the pixel density is greater, there is more available RAM (and we know the benefits of having plenty of RAM.Adopts NFC and a 12mp camera , supports video calling and using a greater resolution front camera, adopts a faster processor, although on the negative side it weighs a massive 4grams more than the beloved.
When it comes to handsets for myself SE are the 1st place I look, although I would never preach that everybody else must have one (it would lose it's appeal for me then)
As for purchase price well without much searching but from my trusted supplier it retails at £430 sim free (I think that's the 32gb) where as the beloved is at least £541 and probably £654 for the same internal memory. Even ruling out the price there would only be one choice for me :o

You haven't answered my earlier question....

Lots of testing & development goes into releasing any os, you really think a company should release the latest update without properly testing it?

As long as Sony & other manufacturers update their phones within a reasonable amount of time, bug free - then im sure most consumers would be happy with that.

I think the issue that thegoodman is referring to is how Google announce a new version of Android before they've even released it to manufacturers. As such, just after the announcement is the first time that the likes of Sony, Samsung, HTC etc can actually get their hands on the code and that's where the process begins to get the newest build onto already released or soon to be released devices. Google could completely mitigate this issue by handing over the code to device manufacturers before they announce the new OS version, thus allowing them to have the new OS ready to go as soon as Google announces it. However, that would also minimise Google's own ability to push their Nexus range of devices.

In fairness that is not unique to Google, we already know that the next version of Android will be Jelly Bean :o
