Besides, you can sell the EyeToy game you get with the Currys deal on eBay hencing knocking off more money on the deal and making it cheaper than the ASDA one.

Oh boy, I only just found this out but Sony have REMOVED the EE/GS (literally the PS2's heart) processor from the European version of the Playstation 3
What does this mean?
It means backwards compatiblity for PS2/PSOne games has gone from 98% to 15% due to emulation being handled by software and not the EE/GS chip
News quote:AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The European version of PlayStation 3 will play fewer
PlayStation 2 video games when it launches on March 23 compared with models launched earlier in Japan and America, Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (6758.T) said on Friday.
"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models," a Sony spokesman said.
PlayStation 3 (PS3) was first launched in Japan and North America in November and the model that will be introduced in Europe will be designed differently.
Software will take over some of the functionality that was originally taken care of by dedicated chips, which means far fewer PlayStation 2 (PS2) games can be played on a European PS3 compared with the Japanese and American PS3 models which play 98 percent of old games.
"Sony is managing expectations by saying now that the new console will play fewer of the old games, and that's a good thing," said analyst Alex Kwiatowski at British market research group Vertical Market Technologies.
Over the last 18 months Sony has had a series of public relations disasters, including a recall of nearly 10 million of its computer batteries, PS3 delays and a software program on Sony Entertainment music CDs that breached computer security.
Kwiatowski said gamers with a PS2 would have to hold onto their device to play their current collection.
"I'm as disappointed as the next game player about the reduced backward compatibility, but even the most nostalgic, misty-eyed gamers will have their steely hearts impressed by the new features that PS3 games provide," Kwiatowski said.
The PS3's graphics and sound capabilities are much improved over the PS2.
"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," Sony Computer Entertainment said in a statement.
About one million units will be available at the European launch next month, as many as were made available in the United States during the first six weeks after the launch last year.
Sony loses money at first on each PS3 sale due to high production costs.
But Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's chief financial officer, said in January the company aims to bring the negative PS3 margin to break even toward the second half of the next business year, which starts in April, by component cost savings on chips driving the PS3.

Thats very bad indeed and more of a reason for people to get a PS2 if they haven't already got one. I still have my fat model PS2 complete with a hard drive

I understand that asda did the £49 deal for a day, and the adverts in the papers were used to draw customers into the shop, and so even if they were super cheap theyd still make more money by getting hundreds more customers into the store to get their shopping, who wouldnt usually shop there.. ie good marketing and good profits..
but i dont see the plus side for currys if they did it for a day without advertising, (other than getting rid of a few extra ps2s)
Same thoughts here, I would be expecting a full page advertisement in the Sunday rags if it is true. Plus a major price change/promotion that takes effect on a Sunday? Never heared of that before.
Note also someone has posted that the 97/47p reduction on old game stock is to take effect on Monday at Currys, seems more realistic.
Once upon a moon they were selling a ps2 with eye toy package, and can see that this package only is the deal - not the console on its own - and the chances of find this package is probably the same as an xbox live starter kit.
For those desperate to get grab the advertised bargain, i hope i'm wrong, but if you have to travel far, may suggest you call the store 1st.0 -

Not sure where you got the 15% figure from????
But sony are not activating the backward compatible site until launch day, so you can't see in advance what games can be played....now that is worrying http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/
Possiably the reason in reducing the old ps2 games that can be played is to reduce the number of used ps2 that will flood the market?
That is good buisness sense based on the number of pre-orders taken - but why make up some other technical excuse?
I for one, don't have faith in the way Sony have handled their release in the UK and will be sticking to my excellent 360 for the time being.0 -

As someone else said read the T&C's, you have to pay the reserve online price!0 -
It's seems as though this is someone's idea of a joke. As there is no evidence of this offer anywhere. Apart from the person who started this 'rumour' over at HDUK.
If anyone has any further information???
RE: PS3 debate... what a joke! £425 for a delayed machine (where's the core machine without the blu-ray for us poor people!!!). The excuse that Sony want to dedicate resource to new game development instead of backward compatability (!!!!!!!) US and Japanese machines already have this (so what's the issue?). Sony forcing the closed down of Lik-Sang importer was a complete joke twisting the law to their own benefit when most of the European Sony Management bought their Sony hardware in advance from Lik-Sang!!!
Sony has gone from hero to zero... I'll be sticking with my C64 for the new*
*unless I get a £50 from Currys

So not only do they sell the PS3 to Europe more expensive and much later, they remove vital features to reduce their costs so they can make more money from Europe. Hmm. I'm not bothered anyway, no intention of buying a PS3 until it's around £100 years from now. I'd rather have a Wii anyway.0
