Thanks all for the helpful suggestions, very welcome.

Not near Brighton.... Would your friend mind the details of her club being given out on a public forum? It may be of interest to others on here.

Running is my idea of hell! - OH runs a lot and we did entertain ideas of short runs together but he's (a) very fit (think Marathon running) and (b) competitive. So it's best for our relationship to not go there :rotfl:
It might be useful for someone else reading this thread though!

I used to canoe a bit - like you said it was just as and when with no regular commitment. Understandably, it's easy to find like minded people doing the same! I haven't found anywhere similar down here (yet). Rowing is something I'll look up as an alternative, thank you.

Don't go running with someone who is better than you. Go with a beginners group. My idea of running was hell, I hated cross country at school. I just didn't like the gym and felt the clickiness of exersize classes. Give it a go would be my suggestion.

I went to an aerobics class for a couple of years and although I really enjoyed it I didnt get to know the others. Most people turned up a few minutes before it started. You couldnt talk during the class and at the end everyone got their things and rushed off home.

I would choose an activity where you can chat to people while you are doing it or where there is some sort of social gathering at the end. I know our local running group start and finish in a local pub!

Why does a social life have to be a group activity though?

Because it has the word 'social' in it. Social means interaction. So if it's a solo experience, it's not social.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I found the same when I joined one!
  • Try this group http://www.spiceuk.com

They have groups all over the country and it is specifically for those who want to make new friends/try new things. They have some great activities on offer and I know people who have really widened their friendship groups through biting the bullet and giving it a go.

What a strange (and rather rude) thing to say.
You suggested joining a club full of lonely women who cuddle cats all day. And you think I'm strange? :rotfl::T

Jess, I wonder where you are (I'm in the South East too but I know it can mean quite a big region!) I feel exactly the same as you - apart from my OH,and one school friend who still lives nearby, I have no social life.

Depending on how brave you are you could set up your own group?

when my sister moved to Canada she started up a 'beer and chicken wings' social group for women that met every first Thursday (or whatever) so she had people to go out with who werent her husband or colleagues. It was a great success as turns out there were loads of women in a similar situation! She told the tourist info, the library and put notices up in bookshops and cafes.

She now doesnt go any more as she picked a few friends up and they meet up together, but the group still meets.
  • I found Dunroamin's post a helpful one, and other people might too.

It may not be a 'social group activity' but it struck a chord as I'm not able to give a pet a loving home at present. I've thought about volunteering at a shelter but I was put off as I wouldn't be able to offer my time on a regular basis. Thanks to the post here, I've found that Cat's protection and a local dogs charity are looking for volunteers and I've contacted them to find out more.

Is it too hard follow forum etiquette and be nice to all moneysavers?

    Leonard: How much you got?
    Penny: Nothing!
Leonard: How can you walk around with no money?
Penny: I'm cute, I get by.

    Hello OP,
You might think about joining a local drama group - if you're not into performing, there are lots of other ways to participate: making props, designing/building/painting scenery, prompting, helping with costumes etc etc - or a choir. Singing in a group is fantastic for your personal wellbeing, it gives you a high like exercising but without the pain! Also can be a great way to meet people, and if it's a large choir they will understand about your varying work hours.
Another way to meet people and make friends would be to volunteer in a human setting e.g. local library, charity shop, school etc.
Best of luck - hope you find the right place for you.
