Welda, whilst most of your post is quite reasonable, your one sample tells you nothing about quality control.

Leif, first of all "No doubt you and Welda would consider me and other forum members to be sitting at their feet with a look of blind admiration on our faces. Hohum." I make no assumptions at all if you look left, right or centre in admiration at installers, or anyone else for that matter!

Regarding QC, as I mentioned, once I had an idea of what product I wanted to purchase, I delved further into manufacturing detail. I am very familiar with the company that did weld procedures (mild steel stove, cast doors) and supply welding equipment, they are in fact a world leader in their global field.

Manufacturing company having ISO accreditation, does tell me they take very good care of their product prior to hitting high street/customer.

Of course with the best QA/QC systems in place, errors can, and do occur, inspectors are human too, we can all make errors.

Again, and my apologies for repitition, according to CRP, Villager stoves are a pile of poo. If it were a pile of poo, I would be the first to bin it, and agree with him. And I would certainly not advise posters in here to at least consider this brand.

A Badger is well able to dend himself, but I do have to say this, Leif. I can't recall A Badger advising anyone what stove to buy, I have read A Badger referring posters to a certain stove crit website "whatstove"? I can't remember site name, but there are good comments on my stove within.

Enough said, been a long day..............

    regards.

Ps, I don't like to hear anyone being ripped off, I'm chasing similar situ on behalf of my 82 year old mother!

You used that expression (not in relation to me) earlier in the thread when you referred somewhat contemptuously to one installer on the forum.

I have worked for many companies with ISO accreditation and it does not really mean much. ISO 9001 (if I get the number right) simply requires that the company has processes in place and they follow them. In reality the processes might not be efficient or good, and they might not be followed. Some companies fiddle them. The only way to know is to examine product, lots of it. In many respects ISO accreditation is no more than a box ticking exercise that companies undertake because, for example, important customers require it. It can improve a company, but not necessarily.

As I understand it CRP was saying that he had more problems with Villagers than other makes. However, I can't be bothered to check back through threads, and the search does not work well enough, so take this as my recollection not fact. I am sure that one other installer did dismiss certain makes because they saw more problems with them. That is in the field testing, not ISO paperwork. They might also have personal bias. It happens you know. And they might not understand metal work as you do, and might sometimes make incorrect statements, it happens.

Personally I find the whole stove business confusing. Certain makes do seem to get consistently good feedback though, perhaps due to better QC, or better after sales support, or even better marketing, though marketing cannot disguise the smell of a turd.

Hi, yes I recall the remark about villager's being problematic, but if I said chalk to CRP, his reply would be cheese. For my first stove install, it was easy to do, apart from liner, that was hell to get down the lumb! Operational wise, certainly works wonders for us.

Regarding understanding of metals, be it steel or cast boxes. Then all the more reason to give credence to a poster. I'm not always correct, far from it, but I used a few innovative procedures to make my install work for me. Same applies to installers, they can, and do make errors too,we just don't hear about this from them, only from other posters, nor do I imply CRP and others who did frequent here, did a bad job either, but hey, he did a bit of turd talking himself!!

My last words on this thread, whether it be a poster asking for decent advise on a middle of the road stove, I would give my unbiased opinion. I would also do the same if requesting info to do a repair (welding). I also see the wisdom of spending the cash to have a chimney lined, even if a sweeps advice said not required. In any event of chimney fire, I like the peace of mind a potential fire is encased within a SS liner.

Here's the link to website A Badger referred folks to.

    http://www.whatstove.co.uk/

Villagers are pretty high up in the rankings, not perfect, but not too bad either!!

    Regards.

That site is of some use, but don't place too much weight on it, apart from basic reliability for which it is probably quite good. If the owners are like me, which is likely, then they are pretty ignorant about stoves! :) Feedback from installers is just one source of information, and I don't think it is right to discard it just because people sit at their feet with adoring expressions on their faces. :D
