Hi Guys, thanks for the pm's to let me know my thread had been hi jacked. Someone thought it was funny to add random comments! That will teach me to leave the site logged in, on the iPad.

Thanks though for all your input. I am going to restart the thread as the comments on cannabis are interesting. I believe it has had a massive part to play in how my son has chosen to behave. And no, I didn't try in once, as was said earlier!
    Thanks again

  • When people say cannabis is not addictive, they mean it does not produce a physical addiction and there are no withdrawal symptoms - unlike hard drugs like, say, heroin, where if you stop taking the drug you will experience serious physical symptoms and become "sick". If you stop taking cannabis the most you are likely to suffer physically is insomnia. That doesn't mean people can't develop a psychological addiction, where they feel as if they need the drug to function - in the same way that people can develop a psychological addiction to any habit. This is why there aren't any patches.

Research suggests that cannabis might make symptoms of schizophrenia worse in people who either already have schizophrenia or who have a genetic predisposition towards getting the disease. From a medical POV, if you or anyone in your family has schizophrenia, no one in your family should take cannabis. There is no evidence however to suggest that it causes schizophrenia directly. The signs of schizophrenia usually start to show themselves in the late teenage or early adult years anyway. It's like the MMR jab-autism link - there is no link between the two, but because the symptoms of the illness typically start to show at the same time as the jab is given, people assume that one causes the other. In the same way, people who take recreational drugs typically start in their teens and early adult years, which is the same time as the symptoms of schizophrenia tend to appear.

By the way, cannabis is the most widely used recreational drug in the western world, second only to alcohol. And when I say widely used, I do mean widely - by a broad section of the population, from old to young, from poor to wealthy and successful. Unsurprisingly, people who take the drug during their working hours, or who take large amounts do tend to struggle to work or get on in life - but then again, so do alcoholics and people who drink heavily or during the day. The majority of people who use the drug recreationally do so in their spare or down time, and still live successful and fulfilled lives.

That said, because it is an illegal drug, there is no getting away from the fact that taking it will bring you into contact with criminals - some of the people who sell it may well sell other, more damaging things, or encourage a general attitude that breaking the law is okay. Personally I'd like to see it legalized and thoroughly licensed and regulated, but I think that's an argument for another day tbh.

Sorry about the length, I didn't mean to give a lecture! I just thought that info might be of use to somebody.

Robster, I hope things improve for you and your son.

What an odd thing to say.

Surely it was in response to the poster calling her children and grandchild a drain on society? In that context it's not really odd. Sarcastic perhaps, but not odd.

OP - I found this which is written by ex cannabis smokers. It's not the most comprehensive website I've ever seen, but there are some facts and help links.

    Hiya,

Don't worry, it's an open forum! But some of the comments weren't mine, so, I am going to start it again, shortly with an update!

    Thanks again

Hi prosaver, Thanks for your comments unfortunately its not quite as simple as letting him smoke it in his room as me and oh have tried that, I don't know if robster will agree but with my son he has to smoke with other addicts, it to him is a social drug they all have to be on the same plane! I can tell you the cannabis he is smoking now is very strong, I have found him hiding in the wardrobe hiding from nothing he was convinced someone was there, I had to take 2 days of work as he was afraid to be alone, it defintely affects their minds very badly, Im sure my son doesn't enjoy a life of crime so far as I know he hasn't turned to crime yet! apart from robbing me blind, I just hope and pray he does not go down that path but its most likely he will, I have had him to councillors and drug centres he has no interest he enjoys the high, there is no doubt cannabis is mentally addictive not physically, which makes it very frustrating I just feel like screaming, Me and my oh have lived with this for 2 years and we now accept he is the only one to change his life, The only thing living with a addict will do is pull you down with them I am finished making excuses for him. Robster I hope that a spell in prison will show your son how cannabis is not for him, my sons friend was very addicted to it and he went to jail for 8 days he hasn't looked back, he took up body building, got a job and is in a relationship, he has been clean 8 months now. I would also like to thank everyone for their kind comments and advice. x

What are you going on about? You need professional help. Not for your son - for you.
