  • I spent absolutely ages deciding what cat to get. I really wanted a blue kitten. Eventually I found just what I was looking for and drove to pick up this chunky little kitty. When I arrived I got chatting to the owners and they were sadly telling me about this impish looking black little boy kitten that they were worried they wouldn't be able to home as he was just black. I felt sorry for him and made a bit of a rash decision and bought him too. As it happens, the blue beauty is lovely, but moody like anything, the black one is the most chilled out, friendly adorable giant cat you could meet, I'm so glad I took him now (except for the fact that he pinches birds pigeons eggs out of nests and brings me them as gifts:-( )

My mum's friend runs a local cat rescue and she's said black and whites are the hardest to rehome. I would have thought it would be all-black what with the superstitions about them, but then:

I was always told black cats were a symbol of GOOD luck, and that a black cat coming to your door was a sign of prosperity. Is that just a Scottish thing then? I have also heard that it's pure white cats that are unlucky if they cross your path. Which of course is ridiculous, unless you consider the fact that sometimes white coats in cats is linked to deafness, so I suppose it may be unlucky for the cat itself!

It is so stupid that people are superstitious in that way. An increased amount of melanin in a random animal causes bad luck?? Eejits.

Perhaps a practical reason for not wanting a black and white cat is that you will get both black AND white hairs all over everything, rather than just black OR white? :rotfl: Personally black and white kittehs, especially mostly black ones with little white feet, are my favourites along with semi longhair dilute torties. And when my sweet but moronic labrador calms down slightly with age I'd love to rescue a couple of kittehs, at the moment he would just trample all over them and probably get scratched half to death. When I do rescue I will make a point of getting black and black and white kittehs seeing as they are so unwanted.

The same is supposed to be true about dogs...apparently it's the black ones or black with a bit of white that are unwanted.

I've always loved black dogs - apart from Lucy, who was my daughter's dog originally, all my dogs have been black. I love the shine on their coats and so may people have said how glossy they were.

Black dogs are my all time favourite and if I was a cat person I'd go for black cats too. I can't understand nobody wanting them.

Jellicat im with you on the superstition bit there was a rhyme when we were younger if a black cat crossed your path but cant remember it ,when we lived at home we had all different colours of cats all as nutty as each other and 2 white brothers Sooty and Licurice (sp) who we used to have to apply sun cream to to stop them burning in the warm weather
  • We foster cats and was always told it was the all black ones that were the hardest to rehome.

We have six cats (two foster cats) and four of them are black and white :D admittedly one does look like Hitler but I still lurrrrrrrrrv him :rotfl:

  • I didnt consider colour when i decided to get my two girls who are sisters, now nearly 2yrs old, although ive noticed there is a demand for tabbies and gingers, when i was looking for my kittens, i saw ads asking in excess of £100 for tabby kittens, yet between £10 - £20 for black and white kittens, such a shame, think some people have future breeding in mind when they get kittens.
