Recorded is of no benefit to a buyer at all though. You don't need an item sent recorded to have different addresses registered with paypal, I have several addresses on my paypal and if I am buying for my mother or my sons I just choose the appropriate address when I check out and have the item sent direct.

The postage method makes no difference at all to that.

I never said you need to have an item sent recorded to use a different address. I was just saying I have everything sent to my work address regardless of delivery method, as there will always be someone at my work address to receive the item.

As a buyer, I quite like the peace of mind of having a tracking number. Royal Mail recorded isn't exactly a great tracking system I know, but if it's sent via a Post Office then you can see when an item was posted via the tracking number. It's also useful to see when it's been delivered if someone else is signing for it (as happens when I have items delivered to my work address).

In addition as an aside, we send all domestic Royal Mail packages via recorded delivery where I work (thousands per year). We used to send via standard first class (small packages only, larger go by courier) and the reduction in "lost" packages since we switched to recorded is staggering, so there's a definite benefit for our customers there as well.

Well remembered, I do miss all my books of stamps and have actually had to buy some !

Sammy is quite correct though, each time you have a delivered recorded item that has not updated online you can claim back your 77p, but usually get a book of stamps and an apology.

I've never heard this before. I've just entered a few past tracking numbers of items that i know have been delivered and successfully received, but some dont show signatures.

How do i go about claiming? Is it just one of the claim forms that are in the PO's?

I know that my buyers received the items because they left feedback, but RM should have got a signature, as that is the process that i paid for.

    Thanks

    That's because it isn't a tracked service.

Then your business needs a kick up the proverbial. There are many more business services on offer for a few thousand packages a year. If you want tracking there is a dedicated tracked post.

Ha, I'll be sure to pass that on :) And although Royal Mail recorded is not a tracked service, Royal Mail do offer an online "Track and Trace" service (in their words) for recorded delivery items, which is what I was referring to.

The vast majority of what we send goes by courier; it's only small packages by Royal Mail (cheaper for light items). I think from memory it's 5000 packages per year to be offered the next day tracked option from Royal Mail and we probably send less than this from a couple of physical sites. It's not me who deals with it directly, but I think finding someone cheaper / more reliable than Royal Mail for sub 1kg packages is difficult.

Anyway, my point was only that using recorded delivery has reduced the amount of lost packages hugely for us (as mentioned earlier by SpammyTheSpammer).

Of course, it would be better if Royal Mail just delivered everything regardless and didn't lose packages, but they don't unfortunately.

RMT is for parcels up to 15kg.

The 'track and trace' option on the website is the link for Royal Mail barcode numbers to be entered, it doesn't mean all services are tracked. They do NOT offer tracking for recorded.

Indeed, but I think you'll find for a typical 5kg package they are far more expensive than virtually all couriers.

For goodness sake, I said in my previous post "Royal Mail recorded is not a tracked service" - I agree with you!

However, you can still track when a recorded delivery package is delivered! From Royal Mail's own "Recorded signed for" page:
Can I confirm the delivery of my item?
If you would like to confirm delivery of your item online, use our online Track & Trace service.

Do you track items between posting and delivery?
No. The tracking takes place following delivery to confirm the item has been delivered

I don't think I can explain this any more clearly and given that this thread is getting away from the original topic, I think I'll leave it there.

    e.
Only if postman gets a sig, and as per a few posts on this thread in some areas a sig being required is rare.

Ive had about 8 items put through my door today, 1 of which was recorded and which I did no sign for. So pretty useless for the seller if he wanted to protect himself against me being a scammer.

Does this hack anyone else off? I am not in to sign for things during the day, so if I knew they would be sent recorded I would arrange for delivery to my work instead.

As it happens, I now have to go to the sorting office before work to pick them up - which is in the opposite direction from my house to work, and a right pain in the backside when I have to cycle.

    That's twice in a week!

    That is all.

Considering that sellers have to send items by a tracked service to have Paypal protection, what do you expect them to do?

Perhaps if divs on Ebay didn't ask for stuff to be delivered to an address they knew they weren't going to be at to receive it, virtually all these delivery problems people have wouldn't exist.

Around 70-80% of our RD items are signed for, whilst RD is far from a perfect service, the term "rare" is somewhat biased.

Recorded though will not stop a paypal claim if it isn't signed for. It is not a tracked service.

This is one of those bits of mis information that paypal keep telling people on the phone and which gives the impression that merely paying the 77p extra means a seller is guaranteed a paypal win.
