Link for all the backwardly compatible games - apparently 72% supported now so good times ahead.

Straying a little off topic here (I'm not planning to get a PS3, having only just bought a nice cheap PS2 for my SD telly) does anyone else think that the BluRay disc packaging and especially the PS3 game boxes looks really cheap and nasty?

I just feel that that big clear empty plastic bit at the top makes it all look unfinished, as if they didn't know what to do with it.

(I know DVDs are overpackaged and could have coped with the old CD jewel cases but the "Next gen" packages just look silly to me)
Wins so far this year: It's been a quiet year so far :)

Sony released a statement today stating that the final Euro-spec for the PS3 will NOT be fully backward compatible with PS2 titles like the US and JAP versions are. In order to cut costs they've removed the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesiser chips (PS2 chips) in the Euro model. The fact that they won't say how many titles are compatible (via software) until launch suggests it's going to be nowhere near the 98% our US and Japanese cousins have.

This news comes weeks after a pre-order campaign and does not come with any price cuts so in effect we're subsidising cheaper US and Japanese consoles with better specifications.

I've cancelled my pre-order, I strongly urge others to do so to send a message to Sony that this simply is the last straw (launch delay, more expensive than US/JAP and even EURO prices, less functionality).

I'm not surprised they've done this, have been waiting for it to happen. I suggest too that people cancel their pre-orders, Sony are screwing with the consumer and need to see that they can't keep doing this.

For anyone itching for a new console, I recommend the Nintendo Wii - better priced and you can play all your old games.

    I agree,
Sony have been taking it way too easy, thinking they will make loads of money off the slack work they put in on the PS3, just because of the PS2. This may well be the case, but I am not one for being loyal to Sony after they take the hard working public for a ride...

They orgininally promised full backward compatibility, now of the 72% that work, some major ones dont work well at all, and even others dont work at all.
On top of the hefty price tag, the release 1.5 years after the Xbox 360, them forcing us to go down the blue-ray route, the loss of most exclusives, the new games not being any better than the Xbox 360s............the only thing they have got is the success of the PS2.

In my opinion, Sony dont deserve our cash - they do not deserve it. They may well be alright, because there are millions out there who extremely loyal, and Sony are taking full advantage of this.

Yeah I total agree I want a ps3 but wont be buying one at the price they are. This country alway get riped off with everything.
Sony should have build a game console that plays just games not does mp3, picture and so on That what computer are for. They should build a top of the range game console priced it at about £300 - £350 with a game and they would made a lot more money. What they have done is made the ps3 cheaper to build for them by removing the ps2 chip increased the price for us in Europe and said well you cant play ps2 games so you have to buy new one at £40 a time. It's just is way out or order.

Sony's quote of 72% back-compatability is somewhat misleading. If you check the list you will see than numersous iterations of the same game are listed (e.g. 3 different SKU's of Resident Evil 4). Here's a brilliant piece from the website UK Resistance which really sums up the situation in full

"HERE ARE THE STATS, COMPILED BY MARK, WHO HAS A LOT OF FREE TIME AT THE MOMENT DUE TO PERSONAL ISSUES:
"I've just gone through the top 50 highest-reviewed PS2 games according to Game Rankings (don't ask me how I got the time, it involves having a breakdown and being a drop-out until I'm sane again) and checked them all against the PS3 backwards compatibility lists for the new European version of the hardware."

Incredibly, Sony's OFFICIAL ADVICE includes the following line:

You should skip optional FMV sequences

    UKR'S OFFICIAL ADVICE:
You should skip PlayStation3." (Source http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/)

These guys have more integrity than any of the UK games websites which all appear to be in Sony's pocket regarding the whole debacle.

There's 1700+ games compatable, and over 2400 ps2 games. (pity all the ones I like - Final Fantasy X-2, guitar hero etc arn't compatable)
