Christ, it's only a bit of backwards compatibility, will be forgotten in a few months, the same way some people were disappointed at certain games not being compatible for the X360, big deal. It's not as if they cut out the blu-ray, or made a weaker console for the EU launch. To enjoy PS2 games fully you'd need rumble, something the PS3 can't give anyway, so keep your PS2 for PS2 games.

but it was the head of sony europe "phil harrison" who was banging on about how it would be fully BACKWARDS compatable from the off and taking a pop at the WII and the XBOX 360 for not being fully capable.now that the ps3 isnt going to be fully compatable its not an issue :rotfl: classic sony.

the problem with needing to keep the ps3 and a ps2 is connectivity.i dont know about anyone else but i have a dvd player, dvd recorder, sky+ and an xbox360,the last thing i need is another 2 consoles connected upto my home cinema when sony were making big noises about the ps3 being a 3 generation console.

the ps3 is a trojan horse for its bluray media anyway as the last 3 attempts from sony to create a dominant media have fell flat on its face.minidisc, dvd+rw and UMD.

if you really want a ps3 i would get an import myself as i would be god damned if im paying for a console to be launched last, launched crippled and pay the biggest price.
If the region layout is the same as DVD, then Japan and UK are both region 2, just the ntsc/pal thing to watch out for. Or you could, you know, buy something better for less :D

i THINK there using different coding though and america is 1 europe is 2 and japan etc is 3 BUT i could be wrong.

edit.quick google search seems to suggest usa and japan willl share the same code and surprise surprise europe gets !!!!!!.

I don't think its that big a deal personally. Over 41% will be backwardly compat from beginning and more from then on. Have exactly the same issue with my xbox 360 but then again apart from pro evo 5 (whilst waiting for 6 to come out), I didn't feel a need to play a 'last gen' game on my next gen console. The only ps2 game I'd even consider bothering with is FFXII personally so not too bother by the chip.

Plus if you pre order from Virgin you can get 10% student discount or 10% discount if buying with their credit card - sadly the offer is one discount or the other and not both at the same time :(. Still only £382.loose change for mine :D

Just a quick note on region coding. As many posters have rightly said Europe is region 2 whereas the US is region 1, however this applies only for DVD. One of the perks of this coding system was that Japan was also region 2 meaning that any DVD's imported from there worked in UK players.

Unfortunately when creating the region coding for Blu-ray, Sony decided to mess around with this and consequently merged the coding for Japan and the US into one and Europe into another so European blu-ray players (hence PS3) are now more isolated than ever.

    Sorry if that's not clear;

    DVD Europe/Japan = R2 USA = R1
    Blu-ray Europe = region 'x' USA/Japan = region 'y'

As someone who was very much looking forward to getting a 'full-spec' PS3 and now isn't, the option of importing might appear quite attractive. However, through a combination of Sony's meddling with region lockouts and their heavy handed legal threats to many of the major importers (Playasia.com, yeasasia.com, liksang.com) not to allow exports to the EU this option is pretty much redundant unless you want to pay in the region of £500.

And even then it still won't play UK PS2 discs...

Might be worth waiting for the rumored X360 redesign with HDMI that is speculated to be coming out around May.

As you can see for Blu rays US and Jap are in the same colour ie red. Europe has been grouped with africa, middle east and australia in yellow

Why not get a 360 then?
  • Oh wow, I had no idea they did that, sony screws Europe again.

Here's a fun list from mr. google!

Proprietary devices or formats that Sony has introduced in the last fifteen years or so.

Mini-Disc (1991)--custom disc format, and used ATRAC audio compression, which is proprietary.
Sony Dynamic Digital Sound (1993)--a competitor to the Dolby Digital 5.1 standard.
Multi-Media Compact Disc (1994)--Sony's proprietary format for high-density optical storage, developed in conjunction with Phillips. Negotiations merged this format and Toshiba's Super Density disc format into what would become DVD.
Music Clip (1999)--Sony's first digital player, used ATRAC audio compression.
HiFD (1998)--a competitor to Iomega's Zip drive.
Memory Stick (1998)--proprietary memory device as a competitor to SD and Flash memory.
Super Audio CD (1999)--an optical disc format with higher fidelity than the CD.
PSP (2004)--Uses Universal Media Disc (UMD) media, a proprietary media format.

Yeah, they all went really well, no failures there.

Go Blu-Ray! I think I have a betamax player somewhere...

I can't see blu-ray winning, but i still love the memory stick, very useful. It's a damn shame there are so many fake ones in circulation though

Just got this off playasia.com's website:

    Compatibility Guide
    PlayStation3™ Software region free*
    PlayStation2™ Software NTSC/J only (Japan/Asia)
    PlayStation™ Software NTSC/J only (Japan/Asia)
    Blu-Ray™ Movies Region A (Japan/USA/Asia)
    DVD Movies Region 2 (Japan/Europe)

*Based on our tests conducted so far, all PlayStation3™ games appear to be region free.

What a mess, I truly hope Sony get a massive kick in the balls come March 23rd. I was looking forward to getting a PS3 for so long and now I simply can't on principle

Isn't it always the same, here in the UK we end up spending more on something that is inferior. Well I won't be getting one now, off to by the Wii looks more fun anyway.
