i remember my dd had them and you could count the spots maybe 10 then when my ds got them he was covered in his mouth up his nose and in his eyes everywhere he was really poorly
i remember the doctor saying to put baby talc on them to dry them but weather its any better than the creams i couldnt say
hope he is feeling better soon
  • Hi
Hope they are all feeling a bit better today.
My tip is pooring a bit of calamine lotion into a spray bottle (you can get from superdrug) and spraying it onto them. My kids loved it beeing sprayed on but not having it dabed on. (wash it out afterwards cos it can clog up the spray on the bottle)
My hubby came down with chicken pox on boxing day a few years ago then a week later I had both girls come down with it!!!! Hubby had picked it up we think at the xmas party we went to at nursery!

It must be going round as i live in northamptonshire ( i think near your county) and my son got 12 spots Tuesday night - i noticed in the bath and on Wednesday he had more.

I asked my friend who said she didnt think they were chickenpox and as he was sent home from old Nursery so many times with suspected chickenpox (and it never was) i thought id send him.

I phoned health visitor and she said that it was probably a reaction to all his injections he had a week ago during half term.

Anyway at lunch time the nursey rang and i went and picked him up and went to see my health visitor as well as a couple of pharmacies to get 2nd opionin and YES they are CHICKENPOX !

Just my luck for my son to get them the week after half term and the half term after we both had time off college&nursery because of the snow. Now i have to take more time off and he cant go nursery.

Although my son is opposite to yours - he is full of energy up at 7-8 in the morning until 9-10 at night running around our flat (havent even got a garden or anywhere he can burn off energy)

I do symphathise but yesterday i phoned doctor as my son has what looked like sticky eye or conjuntavitus and i asked to see doctor or for prescription as hes 4 yrs and was scrating spots then scartching eyes and i was worried.

Reception having already seen us yesterday and being told he was still infectious told me to go down and wait with other patients, children, babys, pregnant women to see doctor during 2 hr period.

I said he is "INFECTIOUS!!!!!!!"
So after 3 phone calls, the nice dr rang me and said to collect a prescription for:
    1 x yellow medicine - "amoxicillin"
    1 x piriton
    1 x eye drops

I was also told to give calpol if needed and pour camille lotion into a dish and dip cotton wool in and dap all over areas where spots are except face and neck.
I was also told that if my son doesnt want to eat it probaly means he has spots in his mouth or tongue and give ice cream and ice lollies as this will sooth and get fluid down

My son has got them on his eye lids and around his boys bits , but apart from winging a bit if he bangs where a spot is he is trying to get out and play and is very normal.

I would ring your doctor or go to out of hrs surgery and ask for medicine and explain how worried you are and explain you son not eating to doctor - you may get vitamins ect.

I think mine will be off most of next week
- so any ideas of how to amuse him would be grateful as i think ive run out-(sorry to ask this on your post, hope you dont mind)

If i hear of anything else that people tell me - i will let you know.
    Hope he gets better soon.

    Hi,

My DS goes to a nursery in daventry! Small world isnt it!

Well an update for all you helpful peeps!
I got the piriton yesterday and hoped it would make him drowsy, but it didnt! It did however help with the itching for a while.

After a VERY sleepless night of his constantly screaming and being so fed up that he couldnt even tell us what would help him! (ahh bless him)
He has had a cool shower and had his usual covering of the calamine and aqueous cream, he didnt want any breakfast but has just tucked into sausages, corn beef hash burger and beans! Now he is watching the box eating some mini eggs!:T

He is spottier than ever however and he is still itching a lot, so i might try the camomile tea idea.

We are hoping that the lack of sleep combined with some piriton before bed will have the desired effect tonigh so we can have some sleep!:T

Will keep you all upto date with his progress, thanks again for all your advice!

    Regards,

    Feisty!

  • How's the little one's chicken pox now? I hope you are both recovering!! I noticed there is another chicken pox thread going on in the 'money savers arms' now - it must be doing the rounds. Thank goodness my two have had it - come to think of it so has DH - I am the only one in the family who hasn't had it yet and I'm nearly 40!!!! I might avoid small people for a while to protect myself.....!!!!!!

    Quite keen moneysaver......

Sorry, can't offer any advice that hasn't been mentioned already. However, when my kids had it, GP gave me unwelcome news! He told me that the baby (about 12 weeks old when got chickenpox!) would almost def. get it again as at that age they can't build enough immunity to 'last forever' . My daughter was 3 and he said she may or may not get it again. The best age to get it apparently is after 5 when they can build immunity to last!! Has anyone else been told this? It was terrible as the baby was plastered in them and I though 'at least it is done with now!' - then GP told me that.

Ive never heard that, but did hear if a young child gets it very mildly, they could get it again. My DD got it when she was about 20 months old, and she was pickled in them, and DS got it exactly 2 weeks later (he was 3) and he was also pickled.
I now work as a childminder, and i think almost every child ive looked after has had chicken pox at some stage, but neither of mine have picked it up again, and i wouldve thought they would the amount they have been exposed to it, had they not enough protection.

Hope OPs son is on the mend now xxx

My son has currently has chicken pox. I am putting peroxide 6% (please ask for a low percentage as it does slightly burn) onto the blisters, its an old remedy found in the book Back to Eden by Dr. Jethro Kloss. My family have been using this for years; the peroxide turns the spots white at first then after they go dark.
I found it’s also best to try and burst a few spots, using a good wedge of cotton wool (fully soaked) and dribbling it on.
Am currently doing this twice a day.
You will notice when you bathe your child the spots will be floating in the bathtub!! The main reason I found for using this: No deep scaring or pox marks.

When fully recovered you will notice no deep pitting scars, if you use the peroxide early and often.
Sounds drastic I know but worked for me when I had it at the age of 16.
    Hope he gets better soon.

Jolene my youngest has had it 3 times between the ages of 1 and 3 years, so yes, they can get it more than once. I keep my fingers crossed every time I hear of a child having them that he doesn't get it again! Calamine in aqueous, piriton (or similar) and lots of TLC. Have had to deal with it 4 times with 2 sons. Sorry I wouldn't put peroxide or any other chemical like that on my childs skin, more to do with the burns risks, could be seen as child cruelty very easily. I remember reading a case involving taking parents to court as a child had peroxide put on their skin.
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi all,

Thanks for all your kind words, he is much better now, still spotty and scabby but much better, he had the aqueous cream twice a day and camomile baths (using tea bags!).
He has scabs in his hair which are proving to be awkward! He is back at nursery this monday, which is lucky cos i start my new job monday too!

    Thanks again everyone!

  • i'm not asking for medical advice, i know that's not allowed - but can chicken pox start on the hands and feet then work it's way along the arms and legs? roo's hands and feet are swelling up now and he's really itchy but the blisters haven't got any further than his elbows and knees, and a few on his face.
