Hi all,
Apologies if this is in the wrong place....
My DS aged 3 has come down with chicken pox, this is is the third day and he is suffering much more than i remember my eldest DS.
I am giving him cool showers cos he wont get in a tepid bath, calpol every 4 hours and applying calamine cream when he will let me (he hates it!).
Is there anything else i can do??? He even has them round his little boys bits and is cryng in pain bless him, they are in his hair too and havent finished coming out yet, i am worried he may get them in his eyes and mouth.
So any ideas peeps on what i can do to help him? He also has a very red rash all over him and he is hot to touch, he has just had a bit of toast but he isnt eating very well at all. When he does eat anything more than a small amount he is sick, so is there anything he may be better having that he will keep down?
Any advice will be appreciated!
Regards

oh bless the poor soul
you can give kiddy ibuprofen as well as paracetamol based kiddy medicine - space them out rather than give them together but it'll help keep his temp down. Don't worry if he's not eating for a couple of days just make sure he has plenty of fluids and try him with a smoothie or some yogurt if he can manage that but if he only takes water that's fine for a few days. The chamomile cream that you can use for breastfeeding pain can be more effective and as it's less liquid is a bit less messy to apply but he'll generally feel horrid and won't want you messing with him. It's not uncommon to get the spots in the groin and any warm areas just try to get him as much air as you can while making sure he's warm enough. Phone your GP if you're really worried and if his temp stays high even with meds. It lasts anything up to 10 days I'm afraid so be patient, although usually it eases after 3-4. make sure his nails are trimmed and try to stop him scratching too much. He's still contagious until all the spots have scabbed over but then you can take him out and about with no worries. If he's really itchy and can't sleep then he might benefit from an antihistamine but phone your GP or NHS direct to check which is best etc.0 -
nurofen (childrens) on top of calpol if that alone is not keeping temperature down, tepid bath with bicarbonate of soda added to reduce itchiness.
ice lollies go down a favourite with illness in children, you could make your own using pureed fruit / yoghurt etcGive blood - its free0 -
i'd use sudocrem around his boys bits, and bicarb soda in the bath eases the itching.0

i had it when i was 15 (5 years ago) absolutely bloody awfull it is.
I really do feel for him.Nothing at all would help it for me and it lasted for about 7days,I have a 2 year old DS.Touch wood he doesnt get it soon.
Ask for calomile lotion with aqueous cream(sp?).Some people say it helps.I heart The Capital0 -
Piriton was a life saver when my little one had the dreaded spots and is perfectly safe to use over the age of one, but do check with doctor or chemist about this. Relieves the itching and cause drowsiness which helps them have a good sleep. Loose clothing is also worth bearing in mind. Hope he is feeling better very soon.0

Hi fiesty, I can definetley sympathise with you in Nov last year my eldest(7)came down with them, to look at him wouldn't have thought anything was wrong apart from the odd spot. However, within a week & a half my younger 2 boy (just turned 4) and daughter was 10mnths old. Both were hot and unwell, odd spot until the following morning. They were both covered from head to toe.The spots in the hair take ages to go too.
You are doing everything you can by giving him calpol and ibruofen. the only things I will suggest is to perhaps allow him a couple of hours without pants on to ease his'bits' so he's not so hot there. alspo perhaps ring the gp about the being sick but could just be body's way of coping with the virus.
Hope little one feels better soon.:grouphug::smileyhea:heart: Mrs Lea Nov 5th '11:smileyhea

Do they still do Calomine lotion?
If so, that's the best bet.
Stops them scratching and leaving scarring.
LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -
Piriton syrup and calamine in aqueous cream helped when mine had it.
The piriton lessens the itching, and a good side effect is it might make him sleep which will help overall. (A single dose knocks me out). The calamine in aqueous cream is much easier to apply than normal calamine lotion, and the moisturisers in the aqueous cream will stop his skin drying out as much.
Bless him - it's an awful thing to catch and I hope he feels better soon. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Hi again all,
Thanks for all the tips, the cream i have is the aqueous cream with calamine in, seems to be good stuff!
Im off to have a look in my cupboards for some piriton, im sure wi must have some!
The smoothies idea is good thanks for that, he is at the moment tucking into a glass of adez which is a soya fruit smoothie type drink, its expensive at about £165 a carton, but its BOGOF at sainsburys at the mo, so bought 4 as its full of vitamins and my boys absolutely love it!
Thanks again evryone!

I found that if you could get hypercal cream, a homopathic cream available from boots and chemists before the spots blistered then it reduced their intensity.
I also put a couple of drops of peppermint oil into the bath as it has a cooling effect and a couple of drops of lavender cos its soothing.
At in a few days time, you'll both be feeling better - another one to ticked off!7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0
