I have interesting excema (how in the heck do you spell that) and himself went through a period of getting an itchy rach thing on his back. I applied Tea Tree cream to both of them. It soothes itching almost immediately and it's lovely and cooling.

You'd best check that it's ok to put on him first (obviously, sorry), and if you've got a local Body Care get it from there as it's cheaper (it can be quite expensive) but it might help him particularly if he's hot. He should be able to use it easily around his 'boy bits' as well so it'll help him feel better. I find it quite moisurising and becuase it soaks in (unlike liquid calamine, I don't know about the one you're using, I didn't know it existed!) there's no flaking or anything to pick at!

Edit: I thought of something else, if he's happy to have showers you could add some tea tree oil and peppermint oil (Js other half has already mentioned these!) to some nice shower gel and wash him in that, it's lovely and cool and soothing so should help him feel better. The smell should perk him up a bit as well.

Hope he feels better soon, he, and you, have my sympathy :-(

One last thing, you need just tea tree cream, don't get the one with witch hazel: it's evil and it goes hot rather than cool!

When my 3 had it (nightmare - you end up scratching yourself lol!) I was told to put the calomine lotion in the fridge which I found a great tip. The lotion is then cold and much more soothing when it goes on. Soup was great for getting a little bit of food into them but as someone has already said a couple of days not eating won't harm him - just make sure his fluid intake is kept up

Hope you son soon feels better.
  • Hi. Not much to add other than sympathy as my DD aged 2 has just come out with it. DS aged 4 had it 2 weeks ago. DD has nasty spots all in her 'nappy area'. I have the calamine in aqueous cream and she loves it. Really helped when DS had it. She is also not eating and has diahorrea. Poor thing!
  • Hi as said above, lots of lovely coolish baths, showers, and i gave my two a homeopathic capsule thing called Rhus Tox, its available from boots and chemists - which is amazing at drying up the chickenpox spots from the inside out - if you see what I mean. My DD had her spots for 4 days maximum and was back in nursery within the week.
  • When our two had chickenpox we used a cream called Eurax (recommended by a local pharmacist) which we dabbed on the spots and it did stop the itching for a few hours at a time. You can also get an anti itching cream called Lanacane. We did the cool baths and calamine but the cream worked the best. They were both absolutely covered in spots but didn't end up with scars fortunately. I would recommend the cream as the itching was driving them berserk before I got the cream. (They were 4 and 6 years old at the time). Hope your little one is better soon - it breaks your heart when you see them covered in spots and feeling awful doesn't it?

  • Sorry, can't offer any advice that hasn't been mentioned already. However, when my kids had it, GP gave me unwelcome news! He told me that the baby (about 12 weeks old when got chickenpox!) would almost def. get it again as at that age they can't build enough immunity to 'last forever' . My daughter was 3 and he said she may or may not get it again. The best age to get it apparently is after 5 when they can build immunity to last!! Has anyone else been told this? It was terrible as the baby was plastered in them and I though 'at least it is done with now!' - then GP told me that.
  • Hi all,

My DS aged 3 has come down with chicken pox, this is is the third day and he is suffering much more than i remember my eldest DS.

I am giving him cool showers cos he wont get in a tepid bath, calpol every 4 hours and applying calamine cream when he will let me (he hates it!).

Is there anything else i can do??? He even has them round his little boys bits and is cryng in pain bless him, they are in his hair too and havent finished coming out yet, i am worried he may get them in his eyes and mouth.

So any ideas peeps on what i can do to help him? He also has a very red rash all over him and he is hot to touch, he has just had a bit of toast but he isnt eating very well at all. When he does eat anything more than a small amount he is sick, so is there anything he may be better having that he will keep down?

    Any advice will be appreciated!

    Regards

    Feisty!

It must be going round as i live in northamptonshire ( i think near your county) and my son got 12 spots Tuesday night - i noticed in the bath and on Wednesday he had more.

I asked my friend who said she didnt think they were chickenpox and as he was sent home from old Nursery so many times with suspected chickenpox (and it never was) i thought id send him.

I phoned health visitor and she said that it was probably a reaction to all his injections he had a week ago during half term.

Anyway at lunch time the nursey rang and i went and picked him up and went to see my health visitor as well as a couple of pharmacies to get 2nd opionin and YES they are CHICKENPOX !

Just my luck for my son to get them the week after half term and the half term after we both had time off college&nursery because of the snow. Now i have to take more time off and he cant go nursery.

Although my son is opposite to yours - he is full of energy up at 7-8 in the morning until 9-10 at night running around our flat (havent even got a garden or anywhere he can burn off energy)

I do symphathise but yesterday i phoned doctor as my son has what looked like sticky eye or conjuntavitus and i asked to see doctor or for prescription as hes 4 yrs and was scrating spots then scartching eyes and i was worried.

Reception having already seen us yesterday and being told he was still infectious told me to go down and wait with other patients, children, babys, pregnant women to see doctor during 2 hr period.

I said he is "INFECTIOUS!!!!!!!"
So after 3 phone calls, the nice dr rang me and said to collect a prescription for:
    1 x yellow medicine - "amoxicillin"
    1 x piriton
    1 x eye drops

I was also told to give calpol if needed and pour camille lotion into a dish and dip cotton wool in and dap all over areas where spots are except face and neck.
I was also told that if my son doesnt want to eat it probaly means he has spots in his mouth or tongue and give ice cream and ice lollies as this will sooth and get fluid down

My son has got them on his eye lids and around his boys bits , but apart from winging a bit if he bangs where a spot is he is trying to get out and play and is very normal.

I would ring your doctor or go to out of hrs surgery and ask for medicine and explain how worried you are and explain you son not eating to doctor - you may get vitamins ect.

I think mine will be off most of next week
- so any ideas of how to amuse him would be grateful as i think ive run out-(sorry to ask this on your post, hope you dont mind)

If i hear of anything else that people tell me - i will let you know.
    Hope he gets better soon.

I didn't know Lanacane was for piles either  !!!- it certainly does the trick on itching though ( I get psoriasis sometimes and it itches like mad). The Eurax I used on my kids is for general use - it had a list of 'conditions' that it was suitable for .... certainly worth a try. It gave our kids hours of peace from itching and left them free to eat junk food and ice lollies while watching Cbeebies. They actually remember their chickenpox with happy memories!!!

I remember having chicken pox when i was around 7, i couldn't put the calamine lotion down, constantly putting more on with cotton wool, I felt sorry for my mum, she worked nights at the time, she kept finding me in the bathroom getting my next fix of calamine. We didn't have any expensive juice to keep us going then :P
