I am really worrying now what i will say - i thought that it was the norm that everyone took their childs waste home and I cannot believe that no one else is expected to. I am going to ask his keyworker next week what the provision is and why we have to take it home - i did make a joke last week to say gosh that nappy you gave me last week stank the whole car out - she didnt bat an eyelid

Wherever I have worked, we have always had to wear plastic aprons and latex gloves for nappy changes and wipe down the mats with anti bac and paper towels after each change, all the waste - nappy, wipes, apron and gloves - went into a sangenic bin which was emptied at the end of day in a yellow waste disposal bag and taken away by specialist disposal units.

If you would like any help with writing a letter, please let me know. I have worked in a number of nurseries and I now work in a complaints team for social care - so I will help as much as I can x

OP - I am sure people here will help you word a letter if you wish or put together a list of the key points that you need to raise with the manager/whoever. I hope you get this resolved.

I find this quite ridiculous. I assume most people don't actually open the nappy to check the contents? So, why send them home?

Hi there - just to add that I am also shocked that they use the blue paper towels instead of wipes and send dirty nappies home with you.
We use cloth nappies and obviously we get these to take home, but the paper liner (which should have contained the poo etc) is disposed of in the same way as disposable nappies. Also we used cotton wool and water instead of wipes when he first went, and they were happy to supply and use these.

If I was you OP I'd try to write down your concerns (not cleaning properly, not disposing of nappies, etc) along with both your personal concerns and the legal requirements posted earlier in relation to both these issues. Then I'd have a word with the key worker about these issues, if this doesn't resolve it go to the manager and have the same conversation. Hopefully they'll see sense before you have to mention reporting them to OFSTED or similar.

Good luck, your poor little boy sounds like he's been through a lot already without this.
  • Poor wee man!! I collect my niece from nursery regularly and have gone into the changing area while the girls change her nappy. They use water and cotton balls but she is always thoroughly cleaned.

The dirty nappy is disposed of by the nursery! I would be horrified if they handed it to me!!

Can you raise the issue with management. You can't be the only parent who feels this way??

I've read most of the thread but not all.

OP this is not on! Surely they have a duty of care to look after your LO properly, and coming home with a dirty bottom does not fulfil that!

As for sending soiled nappies home - totally weird, not normal, and would make me question them big time!

I would probably personally write or email the manager as I am not good at confrontation. I'd also take along a friend along at any meetings - and I'd choose a bolshy outspoken type of friend!

What you describe is awful! You need to act!
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

  • i think the nappy changes are done by the volunteers as it is a charity run nursery as it is always the young girls who say oh **** done a poo today.

I'm horrified at this - seriously! Nappy changes should only be done by your child's key carer or - if the key carer is unavailable - another permanent member of staff. As for him not being cleaned properly...if you sent him into nursery with poo crusted onto his backside, they would have social services onto you! It's outrageous that they are doing this. If you are unable to change nurseries, you should INSIST that they use wipes (provided by you if necessary). As a parent, you are now in a very powerful position where your child's care and education is concerned. You HAVE to be listened to and, if I was you, I would consider complaining to your local authority and Ofsted if your matter is not resolved. These are the basics, and if they can't wipe the poor boy's backside properly, they are neglecting him.

As for sending home the nappies and their contents - this is unbelievable . The nursery has a duty to dispose of nappies and, as a previous poster has noted, this should be done through a contract with a clinical waste company. Good luck! I'm fuming, so no doubt you are ready to explode!!!

Hello, my son started nursery a week after his 3rd birthday and he wasn't totally potty trained at that stage so he had a pull up on. On quite a few occasions he has wet or pooed his pull up, and so had to be changed by one of the teachers. I always provided pull ups and wipes, and spare clothes just in case. But the school told me they had all the facilities to clean/wash him if needed, and spare pants even if needed. They had the correct bins for nappies, had gloves to wear, nice clean mats etc. I was worried what would happen if one nappy was particularly mucky-but was told they would make sure he was clean and washed properly and not to worry. I was never given the dirty nappies at the end of the day.

(he quickly potty trained within a month of starting nursery btw).

So no, what you are saying doesn't seem right to me. Giving you the dirty nappies, not cleaning him properly etc. Poor kid must have a sore botty :( not nice at all.

If you've already spoke to them before about it I'd get onto OFSTED rather than complaining again.

That's the kind of poor practise that they are there to sort out. It's completely inappropriate to send home dirty nappies and not cleaning bottoms properly is a lack of care.

Seriously? I've obviously been living under a rock!

Yep. You have to open your little pot of pee, hold it out and they dip a test strip in it, then you put the lid back on and take it away with you.

Presumably they think you a) want it as a souvenir or b) will make something arty with it later.

Did my head in. I was very forgetful during pregnancy and would keep finding random pots of pee in my handbag! :rotfl:

That nursery is not fit for purpose and should be reported from the sound of it. OFSTED maybe not too good on children's services.
