Attends nursery comes home with a dirty backside

This is really awful for you and your son!
I used 2 nurseries with my 2 girls and have never had any of this happen and they certainly never sent home the soiled nappies, they were disposed of in the proper bins. Nappy changes were logged and I was told if they done a number 2.
They provided the wipes and if I didn't want them to use those particular ones I could provide my own. They certainly never used blue roll or kitchen roll! I had to provide my own nappies.
I did have an issue with the one nursery where they didn't change the nappy and she would come home with a really wet and heavy one. When I raised the issue they denied it. I had to resort to secretly "marking" the nappy I put on in the morning to catch them out.
Even at home I would never use blue roll/kitchen roll, it was always wipes or warm water and cotton wool if their bum was really sore.
I wouldn't want to "see what my child had done". If there was a problem like runny poo (tmi I know), the nursery would tell me!

I discussed this with my DD this afternoon - She qualified as a Nursery Nurse and worked for a private nursery - but, as she pointed out this was over 15 years ago.
The policy at that time was to give the parents an 'Input Output' sheet. The nappies were supplied by parents as well as wipes and any medication which was needed for sore bums.
Nappies were disposed of and collected by a special waste disposal company.
She was shocked by me telling her that your son had his bum cleaned with blue roll - its totally unsuitable for this purpose!
also that dirty nappies were handed back to parents - this DOES contravene several regulations apparently - including environmental health as well as Nursery provision legislation (if this hasnt changed in the meantime). She said that in her time the local councils had a Nurseries Inspector - perhaps they still do? I do know nurseries/childminders etc are regulated by the council - so someone there should be onhand to advise!
I wish you luck with doing something about this - but it does need to be done! how do other parents feel about it? have you spoken to any of them?0 -
The poor little boy. I would be fuming. It is perfectly reasonable for you to expect them to clean him properly while he is in their care. And blue kitchen roll? That is very rough - I would not want to wipe my own privates with that, let alone delicate baby skin.
I am very concerned by the fact that they're sending home dirty nappies. That's disgusting. Disgusting for you having to carry them about and disgusting for the children and staff having to be in an environment filled with dirty nappies. It is actually illegal to dispose of fecal matter in the normal waste (yep - you're meant to flush poo then wrap the nappy for the bin even with disposables, or use a clinical waste disposal company). So by sending you home with the nappy and wipes, they're in effect expecting you to sort it all at home. Or dump them in a public bin off the premises. Ridiculous and I rather suspect a cost-cutting measure to avoid having to pay for proper waste disposal. Where else are they making cuts?0 -
My daughter was at the same nursery for 3 years, from nappies through potty training and beyond. Once, not long after she was out of nappies, she had a very upset tummy. Avoiding TMI, it was everywhere. Her key worker and another nursery nurse ended up cleaning her up in the staff shower she was in such a mess. This was explained to me in good humor at collection time, when the clothes (rinsed and double bagged) were returned minus her pants. They had thrown those away (thought that I would have wanted that, and they were right). This is the level of care we should be able to expect. My heart goes out to the OP. In choosing a nursery, your heart & soul goes into it. We trust these people with our most precious ones, and to find your little person unclean and in discomfort must be heartbreaking.
I truly hope you can resolve this issue. As someone said earlier, you are n the position of power here. OFSTED/Care Commission should be involved very soon.0 -
this is one for Ofsted. You dont have to give a name or anything, but as many posters have said, what other corners are being cut? I fully expect that when my son goes to nursery, that he is cared for as I would care for him myself, and we get just that. Its not cheap, but I am happier for those 3 days im working that all is well and my little man is happy. they should be disposing of those nappies immediately, the potential for spreading disease is huge!
I know this is a really tricky situation for you - my son first went to an alternative nursery and we had a really bad situation regarding his care and he had to be pulled out immediately. i broke my heart and DH had to take over and deal with them. Cheeky sods had the nerve to try and invoice us for lack of notice when we withdrew him! after that we communicated only in writing and did report to Ofsted. We felt that in addition to what we percieved as a very poor standard of care, we also had a duty to be sure that other children were safe there. Happy to say, since we moved its been wonderful. He has thrived and blossomed into a wonderful little man and we have never regretted our decision for a moment.
good luck to you and your little one.0 -

Whether its paid or not, no child deserves to have excrement on him after he's supposedly been cleaned! To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0

I had similar problems with my eldest son at nursery, when ever he was teething his poo used to be really acidic and if he wasnt changed straight away it would burn his bum something chronic ! (he used to scarf a whole bag of grapes in one sitting which also didnt help)
I had 2 or 3 occasions where I would get him home to find a dried poo in his nappy that had clearly been there a while, when i spoke to the nursery about it they said unless he tells them they cant go checking nappies !? It stank the whole room out though and must have been eye watering for everyone being in that for even a small about of time !
Hope you get it sorted OP !Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
Report them, the blue roll is wrong, taking the used nappies home is disgusting.
You are entrusting to them the most precious thing in your world.
They really aren't acting caring for him at all and I would question food hygiene, is he getting fed at all, enough water - is he being stimulated and challenged ... They are providing a service and it has to meet a basic standard - which it doesn't sound like they are.
Please report them even if you change nurseries as there seems to be something amiss there.0 -
There is the Care Commission in Scotland which governs educational establishments (both government & voluntary) for areas such as this - is there something similar in England who you can contact?0
