Attends nursery comes home with a dirty backside

Please can anyone advise

Our son attends a local nursery he is still in nappies. He attends for 3 hours a session. He always has his nappy changed by them but they dont use wipes they use kitchen roll stuff and water.

We provide the nappies for him.

However lately he has taken to doing a number 2 whilst at nursery and they change his nappy but always leave residue on him. Which stains his new nappy and leaves him sore. Today it happened again. (they give you the old nappy to take home) poo and all (is this the norm) as they say they dont have facilities to get rid of them and also they like you to see what your child has done.

Does anyone else have this problem and do you think i should mention it to nursery - how do you say can you please wipe my sons bottom better please ?

Or am I being petty. it drives my hubby mad.

Thanks

  • Yes I would especially if its making him sore. Its part of basic childcare to ensure that is clean and dry before putting a new nappy on, plus being vital to maintaining a healthy bottom.

I would be saying something in a nice way to start with if it were mine. I would be getting annoyed too if it kept happening.

Do you know who is actually changing him? If so maybe just a word in their ear to start with "Please would you mind ensuring he is clean from poo before a new nappy is put on as he does suffer from nappy rash?"

That way you are making your point but not directly proportioning blame. Well to start with anyway, if it persists after you could be more direct.

    Good luck

I have to say it's not something I have come across with the 3 nurseries DS attended... I would definately not be happy if it is causing irritation to your LO, I would mention it to nursery staff and see what response you get.

I don't think you are being petty, your child should be coming home clean, it's a basic need surely?

maybe if you offer to supply the wipes???
  • Btw, my children's nappies were never sent home, always disposed of there. I'm surprised that a nursery hasn't these facilities, the changing/cloakroom area must stink by the end of the day.
  • Aw, poor little chap :(

Nex time he goes to nursery, I would explain what's happening and provide a packet of wipes (write his name on them) along with the nappies. Some cream too if necessary. When my littlies were at nursery we had to provide wipes, cream and nappies if that was what we wanted them to use. I was never presented with the evidence at the end of a session I must say!:rotfl: I would question this - presumably there are babies who attend all day, where are they storing dirty nappies until they're picked up? Surely this must be a hygiene risk?

My nursery had proper yellow bags (the clinical waste ones) that were picked up by a company. I would imagine waste collection should be in their procedures that should be made available for anyone to view.

As you supply the nappy why don't you also put in some baby wipes and ask if they could possibly use these as you baby is getting a very sore bottom.

If you provide the disposal bag you can see whether they have used them or not.

I think this is something that can be handled easily and pleasantly for the benefit of your baby.

I agree with the others. He shouldn't be coming home with a dirty bum.

Would it help if you provided wipes along with the nappies? Maybe they are ultra-scared about providing anything that might give a reaction. But if they used yours then there shouldn't be a problem.
Might also be a route into asking about it without being confrontational. E.g. "Would it be ok if I put a pack of wipes in the bag for nappy changes, because he gets sore if he's not fully clean".

[Seem to have cross-posted with a few people saying the same thing!]

In terms of the nappy being sent home, I think that's a little off of them but it wouldn't be something that would bother me.

A friend of mine had this problem with her nursery, her little daughter suffered so much because they just wouldn't do the nappy changing properly. They had to change nursery on the end, because it was like talking to a brick wall.

How old is your son? Is this a nursery school or private nursery?

Can you supply wipes and sudocrem for example and insist they use these? Have you spoken to manager and asked if there is a nappy changing policy?

This seems completely weird, collecting poo filled nappies, supplying your own nappies, using kitchen roll!

How do they make sure you get the right bag of poo to "check" save them up for a month then leave them in the office, so they "analyse" the changes.

    I would just change nursery.

But no my nursey does none of this we get a daily sheet that list times when nappy was changed and what it contained solids liquids or nothing, what has been eaten, and how much, sleep times, and activities done. No bags of poo, just paper with big blobs of paint on it for the fridge door.
