Just spoken to Emirates - we're on a very low economy class ticket - so we don't get the hotel package. We did get very cheap flights!

The operator at Emirates said to use the Marhaba Lounge for about £11pp - I asked about any complimentary deals for long transit passengers but she said there are none? She didn't know anything about any other lounges.

If you just want to sleep, then follow the signs for the quiet lounge (I forget exactly what it is called, but it will be obvious). This lounge has full-length chairs with head-rests and foot-rests, so you can lie down completely and sleep. Signs warn you to set your alarm to wake you in time for your flight, and this is necessary. Very comfortable; just what you need.

Just called and they have hotels booked for me. I booked via the website. I'm guessing you did so via a travel agent.

Be careful of Dubai, if you have 0.001g of any illegal drug (which includes drugs like codeine let alone cannabis) on your shoes or clothes you will get a mandatory 4 year sentence.- be careful where you walk or sit and pray to god that no one has done drugs in the public places where you choose to walk or sit, and hope that no one has snorted cocaine with your £10 notes.

As to the airline, the Arabic airlines are pretty much all very good.

I would edit that to you may get a sentence. Although there have been cases of people being prosecuted for seemingly innocent incidents, there have been others that have been able to enter and leave Dubai with prescription medication that would be otherwise illegal in the UAE with no problems.

That is - for those that carry it without it being discovered by customs. I'd been to Dubai carrying prescribed Temazepan - I find it quite disturbing that that simple act could have earnt me a jail sentence.

I know of a lovely little 84 yo woman that had various controlled medications in her hand luggage (she was on a three day stopover on her way to Oz - emigrating). She had her prescriptions with her, and they accepted these as proof that she was carrying the items legitimately.

Codiene is not a 100% prescription drug in the UK it can be bought off the shelf. Take it to UAE and if found you would be in hot water. And it's not only people from western countries visiting UAE who need to be aware, countries like India have little to no prescription control of medical drugs.
  • Hmmm, that is worrying.

I usually take a sleeping tablet to help me through the flight, plus one of my kids is prescribed ritalin. We have a copy of the prescription, and a Doctors' letter.

If we are transiting (on the way out), are we still subject to stringent searches?

Yes it is worrying, and not something worth risking for saving a few quid IMHO.

The reports in the BBC of the person from UK found with 0.003g of canabis on the sole of his shoe
says he was in transit to an African country. I assume that means transit lounge, but I guess it could mean he wanted to stay over 1 or 2 days. The way the article mentioned this though suggested it was transit lounge.

transit lounge is a place where EVERYONE has to go through when you arrive in Dubai Airport, unless your final destination is Dubai- in which case you will be sent out of the airport after a few frisks and checks.
now when you arrive in the Transit Lounge- which is a long hallway with lots of Metal detectors, you will be instructed to remove your jackets, shoes, mobiles, keys, belts etc. etc. just like any other airport in the UK. after that you can proceed to the floor where you have gates to all the flights. from there ,if you have time you could go down another floor where there's the famous Dubai Duty Free Shops.
