I've just had a phone call, I came second, like that should somehow make it better.
Sorry about that Lexilex, you've just got to keep plugging away. It shows how bad it is out there when i'm reading comments from people who were here like me this time last year.....
I had that kind of phone call today as well. You know the one from the agency that goes. "We've heard back from the client and they really liked you, thought you would be a great fit for the company but......."
This one went to the internal applicant (again)
However......
They liked me so much that they want me to take the internal applicants job. Not sure how to take this one, the job is £4,000 less than the one I applied for but £1,400 more than i'm on at the moment and it is a permanent position rather than the temp one that i'm doing now that I hate. Apparantly they went with the internal applicant as they knew more about the company than I do so would fit quicker into their new role. That's a new reason to be turned down for a role to me.
Anyway, i'm going back tomorrow for a chat about this other role and to see what it's all about. The agency weren't too keen about my original thoughts but then they were just worried about not getting a fee at all so why should I care about them?
I'll keep you updated.0 -
Hope it works out for you Stew!
I have a bit of a dilemma. When I got the call last night they asked me if I would like to volunteer for them. I'm in two minds about it. In one way it would be good, I do have a0 voluntary position at the minute, but work seems to have dried up and its constantly me getting in touch with them about going in. On the other hand though, if I am not good enough to work for them, why do they want me to volunteer? Free labour?
I don't know if I am just bitter. He's going to call me back in a couple of weeks to discuss it but I don't know what to do.0 -
Lexilex, there's more than one way to skin a cat.....
Sorry you didn't get the role, but a similar thing happened to my husband last September. He came second. Three weeks later the person who came first walked out of the job. Husband got the call and got the job (contract). When he actually started the job, the company realised he was far capable of more than what he was doing for them at the time. He finished in January, then started for them again at the end of the month at a much better rate on another job. Still contract, but it's work.
Whilst it's galling not to get the job, why not get in there and show them in the nicest possible way that they should have employed you. You never know what may come of it.Make £2025 in 2025

Stew if you hate the temp job is there much to lose by going for the other one? Better rate of pay than what you're on at the moment, and maybe a little bit down the line you'll be the dreaded internal employee when a better role comes up?Make £2025 in 2025

Thanks for the repsonses.
I've been back to see about the other job and have accepted the role (though I think they're getting a bargain). It's not really me but finding a permanent job in this climate is so hard that it's got to be seen as a success.
I'll finish at my old job next Friday and start the new job on the following Monday.
Here's hoping for some luck for everybody else here.
Have a good weekend all.0 -
Congrats Stew, you're right, just get back into something permanent for now as long as the pay cut doesn't affect your living standard or ability to get credit and the worst that happens is you're in work whilst looking for something better, or if you give it a year and the economy gets better but they try to use the recession as a reason to freeze your pay, you can get going again yourself.
@ Lexilex - I didn't get a call or email last month about my volunteering and am not chasing them up, they've had enough of my time which I am now putting into full time applications. Depends whether the new place is willing to offer travel expenses or not as a minimum and there'd have to be the understanding that whenever a paid job came up anywhere you'd be on your way.0 -
Well after being away from this thread for the best part of the year I'm unemployed again (stupid agency job finished). Glad to see this thread is still here!!
Have been out of work all month...there just doesn't seem to be anything about, I haven't even had any luck with any of the local agencies. Trying to stay positive but am finding it tough.0 -

Well done Stew, it might not be exactly what you want but definitely a step in the right direction
I really need to get on with the job hunt more, I know I have something just now but 6 months and at this wage just isn't ideal!
It's been quite tough since I started, the girl I share an office with who was showing me the job had to leave at the middle of the week (family bereavement) so I'm running out of bits to do before I really need someone else to show me the rest!Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0 -

I have been unemployed for almost nine months now. I worked previously as an Academic Mentor in a local college, which involved going into local high schools, to help those students struggling with their Maths and English. Unfortunately, it was a local council funded project and there were no funds for the following academic year.:(
I have A/A*s at GCSE, As at A Level and 2:1 honours degree from a very good university.
I'm coming up this year to my 30th birthday this year and am feeling...quite distraught actually, that I have no career to speak of. In an ideal world I would be thinking about starting a family, but financially there is no way this is even a possibility because of my lack of job.
I am applying daily for jobs, but there is a serious lack of graduate jobs in my area and am applying for jobs that you might say I am over-qualified for, but I am not hearing anything back. My SIL is in HR and has over-hauled my CV, to no avail.
Hi all,
Been lurking around here for a while considering joining in, but this post finally pushed me into doing so as it didn't so much ring a bell with me as a whole chorus of them.
Last time I worked for pay was in March 2010, when I was made redundant from a job which wasn't my ideal job (working in a fleet hire office organising maintenance of cars and trucks) but it was good enough-it was the last in a long line of agency jobs that I'd done while studying at uni (I'd worked almost continuously from the age of 16 apart from an 18 months during a year studying in Germany for uni and 6 months after that).
Was made redundant due to "downsizing", so decided to use the chance to break into my dream job as a sports reporter.
In June 2010 I got an 8-week internship at the BBC writing on sports-did that and from it became a commentator on ice-hockey games for my local team (unpaid) on live broadcasts. However, my search for paid work has been long and fruitless-250 jobs applied for (at least-that's a conservative estimate) and only a couple of interviews in 2 years. However, I am doing voluntary work for the hockey team writing media releases and doing marketing materials for their website/social media etc.
Now I've almost forgotten what it's like NOT to be short of money. I'm now engaged to a wonderful girl (who lives in Northern Ireland while I live in the West Midlands)-we only see each other five days a month when one of us can afford to travel, and I have days where I wonder if I'm already on the scrapheap at 27. I have 2 A* and a C at A-level, a DHE, speak three languages and despite that, am constantly being told I either "don't have the experience" (when I go for jobs in the media/marketing arena) or am overqualified (if I go for admin/customer service roles).
You're not alone, Lancslass....there's lots of us like you out there at the moment. If everyone gets what they deserve, then by the looks of this thread there's a lot of people who'll get the job they've been hunting for soon, just because of the work they're putting in.
There's been days when I've been convinced everything is crap and then read of a success story on this thread or the other, so thank you, everyone. You've kept me going without even realising.English by birth,Kentish/Coventrian by God's graceNumber of jobs applied for: 246 (and counting)0
