I think Asda only do smartprice ones in tomato sauce. Aldi work out cheaper though. It's 38p (just gone up to 42p I think though) for a tin of Sardines in sunflower oil. I drain (sometimes rinse) them for the cats as too much will give them the runs, the dog just gets them in the oil though.

Do not have Aldi anywhere near me :(

Zara loves the tomato ones though so nothing lost :)

Tomatoe sauce....i seem to remember on one of fridaycats posts something she said about cats being allergic to or poisoned by tomatoes?....it was in her 'how to get oil off a cat' thread........but i did once have a cat that was mad about pizza,so she must have a bit i guess.

It's when tomatoes are green that they are potentially not good for cats - they can cause tummy upsets, vomiting, diarrhoea, even cardiac arrest and death in severe cases.

I personally wouldn't feed my cats a food in tomato sauce: it's not just the tomatoes, but you need to be conscious of all the other things such as salt and sugar that will be in there that are not great.

But like most things, if the cats like it and they have it in moderation, in small amounts on an occasional basis, it probably won't cause a problem.
  • Tomato sauce & cats ........ is a "no" (sorry)

If you've got any more tins with the tomato sauce on, I'd rinse it off before giving tot them.

The PDSA specifically request Mackerel in Tomato Sauce for their more pernickety patients, as it can encourage them to eat when everything else fails - even prawns (which they also ask for).

    So it can't be dangerous.

    Interesting JoJo - thanks.

I was told by my vet that cats should never be fed anything with tomato sauce on!

I've read recommendations not to feed it to pets on the basis of the salt and sugar content. I don't think the odd bit would do any harm though.

WEll, my lot surwived sardines in tomatoes - one 125 g tin shared between the 6 of them (daughter's 2 girls are here for a bit now).

Zara had a whole tin by herself.

I have to say that I love VETUK for this reason:

they sms on the day of delivery with an HOUR slot when the things you order frm them will be delivered.

I ordered Skinners for Zara, 1o litres of OkoPLus for the cats (got some left at hoome so extra 10 litres will take us to end of May) and some balls from Zara, they will be delivered between 10 and 11.

HOpe the balls are good.......not sure how many there is as it does not say on the description:
