I need to join you to get motivated in using up various tins lurking around my house.

Today decided to use tin of beans, tomatos and carrots to make soup
and a tin of potatoes to make chips and potato salad so that will be 4 tins out of the cupboard. Would love to empty them all so I could get organised, but that might be a step to far.

Can I ask a question please? I am really interested in doing this but I have to pay bus fare each day to get the children to school does this mean I can't do it?

If you buy a weekly bus pass then you can combine all those payments into one, for the week or month. Then you can effectively have many days without any bus fares. Though you could also take out the money at the beginning of the month and count that as one day, but then use that cash pile to fund all the journeys either daily or buy buying passes.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

:) Have gone a whole day without spending anything, whoo-whoo.

Just did August's accounts and have spent a total of £656.50 on everything inc rent, service charges, council tax, gas and electricity, food, bike repairs and food, clothing, toiletries, the dentist, a haircut and a coach fare.

This has meant that I have money left over from my wage, which is always a pleasant place to be.

Spendy month due to dentist and bike repair, shelled out half as much as on snacks as I did on proper food to be eaten at home (:o) which is very self-indulgent of me and shouldn't be repeated.

There have been some pleasant spends, such as 50p on a book I have been searching for 2nd hand for a couple of years (not in the library) and a fleece and a long-sleeved top at 50p each which are like new and which I can see me getting years' worth of use from.

I also had a voucher for a £1 four-pinter of milk which lasts me a week and have replaced some items in the storecupboard which I have used up, so not just living off the stores and postponing spending.

September shouldn't feature any utility bills as far as I know, although I think the annual allotment rent invoice comes in at some point this month. I will pledge to use up stuff in the freezer and try to stay outta the sweetie section of the supermarket. Wish me luck with that last one. ;)

Sillyinthepast you can do it however works for you.

When we do it I don't include direct debits or petrol for us to commute to work, as these are essential spends - same as the bus fare for your children.
  • I have spent a total of £12.94 from my food budget since getting home last Friday from my holidays and hopefully need no more shopping this week :):):) Definitely it will be freezer roulette (I always forget what I've bunged in there once its cooked) tonights dinner was a very nice veggie curry that was from a batch I did about March I think, but it tasted fine once defrosted and 'nuked' in the microwave :):)Tomorrow I am at the pub for quiz night so who knows what Wednesday nights dinner will be I think I may dig out a piece of pork fillet if I can find it in there Its so crammed with stuff it mmay just be a case of taking what ever is onb the top layer and hoping its something edible :):):)for dinner and not a puddingI know I have some pastries in there but which is the apple and which the meat.
  • Joining you for a mini fast until Friday, when it's pay day, I should have enough in my cupboards to last until then, but like you JackieO some of it will be freezer roulette!!

Had my first nsd today, and leftovers from family dinner for my tea tonight. Off to bed now as up early tomorrow to babysit dgd 3, whilst her mom is at work in the morning.

  • Freezer roulette for us tonight as well, not because I don't label things but because I'm awful at reading my own handwriting!

Does that say chasseur or chowder??!

I use masking tape to label as a) I have tons left over from decorating and b) it's easy to peel off tubs and freezer bags wihtout making holes.

:) I never label anything in my mini freezer as I like to add some randomness to an otherwise sensible life. I can't be Little Miss Efficiency in all aspects, it's just too tiring.

Today is my second NSD of September. I really thought that I would fall through the doors of the supermarket after work as I was climbing the walls for chocolate, but resisted. By promising that I would cook some flapjacks from ingredients already on the premises.

Which I have done. They are cooling in the tin (drool) and there are bread rolls baking to use the oven efficiently.

Last month I had a revelation which reveals how dim I can be about some things; spending mostly happens in shops. Therefore, by limiting the number of times one goes into shops, the opportunities to spend are automatically reduced. Doh!

Sooo, every day that I can postpone crossing the threshold of some kind of retail premises is a day when money doesn't leave my hands. It's all good.

PS I am nearly 50 and have only just twigged this one.:rotfl:

I work in a supermarket and it is amazing how many people go shopping on a daily basis, always with the same excuse, " i only came in for a few things , now look how much I have got" and before they know it the have a trolley full. x

  • Another sfd for me, looked after dgd 3 this am and then home, can't use the car again because the fuel is low and I still have to get to work Thursday and Friday, hope it lasts. DD 1 has a couple of stamps she's not using so I can use one to post a letter I have got so saving me about 60p, from small beginnings!!

Dinner tonight were roasted veggies that were lurking in the fridge, couscous and a piece of white fish with herbie crust followed by Jam sponge that was left over from Sunday dinner, so very filling and lovely.

I will have to see what I can find tomorrow, I have courgettes growing in the garden, so I may use a couple of those up.
