Well worth sweet talking your Dad into growing some. They are fairly easy to grow and don't take a great deal of room.Over here an onion is around 15-20 cents each. I did have a big bit of luck last year as I went to the local Supermarket quite late in the evening and they were selling off 5 kilo (11lbs) nets of onions for 10P so I bought one and came home and spent the next day peeling, slicing and dicing lbs of the blooming things
:) what I didn't bag and freeze for myself I gave bagfuls to my daughters for their freezer ,then knocked on all of my neighbours doors giving them bagsfulls as well.Used them all up eventually but that was the best reduced priced thing I have ever bought
:)I didn't buy an onion for months afterwards.
one US dollar is around 62p converted to sterling so it seems quite expensive.Although not too bad if its a very large one in weight:)I try to keep a bag in the freezer ready diced so I can just use as much or as little as I need in recipes, handy when you live alone.

Hi everyone, meant to say yesterday, well done Secretstasher and anyone else reaching their target - it's not easy!
Got out for a walk this morning, but weather is awful now - just picked up about 20 windfall apples, so stewed apple for me as well Jackie. Reading your post we have weirdly mostly the same veg in (Aldi super 6?), I didn't have a cauli until yesterday when OH came back with it instead of eggs (why?!!) so cauli cheese for dinner tonight and probably tomorrow as it's a big one.
Printer is now on the blink, so probably another bill. Sometimes can't be doing with technology. I'm going to go for Mon - Fri FF, so 5 days for me.
Thifty, well done avoiding the cafe, that is my big downfall, I love a coffee out!
Erica I agree, we are fortunate to live in the developed world - it has it's faults but could be a lot worse. I try to count my blessings.
Have a good evening everyone.0 -
Lovely mother in law came for sunday lunch today and brought a goody bag as she calls it. 2 big jars of coffee, box of chocs, variety pack of cereals for the kids and lots of sweets and choc for us all:D
Going to sneak some into the swimming bag to avoid the being ripped off at the vending machine event :rotfl:
Made pie filling for tomorrows tea with left overs from sunday lunch and got out flaky pastry of freezer to roll over the top. Think there will be too much so will make apple turnovers too I think.
I need a new mascara, got out my 4 tubes which are all in stages of drying out, put a bit of baby oil in an egg cup and dunked each wand in it and wiggled them around. Looks as if they are rejuvenated:cool: Hope I don't get eye infections now though!
Thank you everyone for your posts and encouragement, together we can fight this consumerist nonsense!
ETA - Jackieo I have an allotment, onions are very easy. I have one and half big potato sacks in my utility room full! Potatoes need digging up this week but it's going to rain again! Only dry day this week and I have guests! Oh well! Can still dig a bucket full up in the rain and fetch the remainder of the beetroot home to pickle or roast. Might make some chutney this time as my cupboards have rather a lot of pickled beetroot already!Cross Stitch Challenge Member ?Number 2013 challenge = to complete rest of millenium sampler.0 -
I am starting to feel deprived after a week of fiscal fasting, with another week to go. (Groan) Oh well, on the upside, I had thought I had run out of tin foil wrap; I did some digging in my cuborad where I keep my plastic bags, trash bags etc. and found a brand new roll ready to um... 'roll'. (LOL!!:))
I am thinking about ordering a book on am*z*n(dot)com as a treat. I think I am going to get, 'Life of Pi.' I watched the movie with my mom and loved the story. I think the book will be even better. I will buy it used of course. But now I am starting to change my mind on that as I type this. I'll think on it, maybe ask for it for Christmas.
One more week, one more week.....I think doing a fiscal fast for two weeks in a row is a little too hard for me. I am running out of a lot of things I need. I am thinking of doing a FF every other week or two weeks out of the month.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!!!!!
One more week Secretstasher then we are done!! (at least for this month!!)Frugal in '14!!!! God Bless all of You!!! Frugal = 'Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without!!!'-Saying from the Great Depression in the US 1929-39. Love you, Erica Dawn0 -
well i really need to get to grips with the ff, had to spend yesterday as needed bread, also my dd changed her bed and on the underside of her mattress was moldy !!! so now spent the last of savings on a new mattress for her, no the wonder shes had a chest infection this week, we have lived here for nearly 4 years but this last 6 months everything seems to be getting moldy yuk!! , so its more important to save to move i just hope, i can, i know coming on here and reading all these post have helped me, even if not reaching the 7 days has made me really think about where my money goes, so thanks to all x0

Oh Dear mam_of_five thats awful.you really didn't need to have to fork out for a new mattress especially when things are tight.I hope you sort our the damp problems OK.
EDC Well done on surviving so well on the f/fast.Improvising on things instead of buying stuff often helps.Do you not have a library near to where you live where you can borrow the Life of Pi one of my grandsons is reading it at the moment actually I have read the book myself ages agoand thought it was really good. From what I remember from my last trip to the US the library system is pretty good.
I always try there first if there is something I want to read I am reading Hilary Mantels 'Wolf Hall' at the moment, not a bad read.
Today is day 14 and I have to go to the shops to get a few things but I am only going to buy whats needed for my cupboards.Cheese, flour, eggs and some fruit.I keep a list by my kettle and as I run out of stuff I add to it.So I won't be spending a great deal today. Then around 1030 I have a small tea party to go to Our local library run a book club and its our two year birthday since we opened and one lady is bringing a cake and we are all taking in bits and pieces for a small celebration.
Then this afternoon I have to bake some choc chip cookies for my grandson as I promised him some when I was at his house yesterday. The weather has been awful with very heavy rain and more is forecast ,still its not too cold at least so the heating is still off .Hope you all have a frugal day and manage to hold on to your purse strings
Cheers chums JackieO xxx0 -
Thrifty, have a look on the blog agirlcalledjack.com for a good recipe for instant porridge that works with a kettle or a microwave and is 9p per portion!October Grocery Challenge £4000

Morning all!
Can't believe I am on day 6 already! It has not been easy, not buying the latest sw magazine hurt lol but I can wait. Used my vouchers when I bought the milk, bread etc but had to go back for another unexpected spend later, some party tea like treats to cheer up dd who is now 35 weeks along, not long now :jTo put a smile on her face though was well worth it, a long time since my babies were born but I do still remember how hard the last few weeks are.
Today is catching up with washing/ironing and cleaning yuk but it should keep me warm at least. Menu planned to the hilt so hoping to keep going for as long as I can, although Jeff Yeager only suggests doing this for 7 days and buying in the necessaries (milk, fuel etc) first. We are using up all the little samples this week, shampoos, coffee sachets etc that dh collects when away from home with work.
Big (((hug))) to Mamof5 hope things improve soon.

Don't fret too much parsniphead, we all have days like that I just did at the weekend! Just draw a line and move forward. It really does show up where to plug the gaps though. I had a card shortage and had to either buy some or get craft stuff out and make a few so I wouldn't be stuck again. Need to do the same with little presents. Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
