It really does work chums as it helps to concentrate your mind when you see how much you have in there to last until the end of the month /week .Back in the 1960s when I got married I only ever had cash anyway so my housekeeping £8.10.00 in those day paid for the food, gas meter, and any treats .
I had the same house keeping for almost 8 years until I had our second baby in 1969.

When prices really started to go up with the coming of decimalisation things almost doubled in price overnight !!!but also wages did as well so no better off really
I have stuck to my food purse cash system for 50 years and it works well, as you know when your purse is getting light you stop spending.I know if I really needed something I could go and draw extra from my bank account but I would rather manage on what I have, and I can still have the odd cream doughnut with a little bit of 'happy cash' saved from my food money :):)

Thanks Jackie - i am going to try this next month x

I'm trying the cash only this month.. I've got £100 left out of £250 extra £100 for chritmas as had visitors Christmas Day and Boxing Day) so should be OK. There's only me and DH and payday is 24th, which is when my month starts again.

Welshbookworm that is sooo annoying! Well just 4 NSD because of one ruined with buying pesky toilet roll. Longest i've lasted I think, keep getting tempted with sale emails! I've run out of diluting juice now as well as diet coke so onto drinking tonic water with frozen lemon :-s

Still today went OK, had to top up my Oyster (but that was already allowed for) and managed to get through without spending anything else .
Just that pesky tin opener mucked up yesterday!

Day 6 completed yesterday:) need to go shopping today to stock up on fresh things I have run out of. Will be aiming to start another fiscal fast as of tomorrow for at least another 6 days, but hopefully longer! I have taken a note of the things I have run out of over the course of the fast but I still have loads of food left in both the cupboards and the freezer, it's the fridge that's empty:) I am hoping that I can used up a lot more over the next fiscal fast:j it will be nice to see my freezer not so jammed packed!

spent £2.87 yesterday a quid on milk (I am making lots of tea for my lovely builder who is renovating my bathroom so I don't mind)then a bag of reduced Bramleys for 39p, a loaf of bread from Icelands £1.00 and a couple of jacket potatos 48p(reduced of course :):)so not a lot of food money spent so far.£7.58 in 11 days of January I am really keeping a tight rein on cash this month.Just re-done my food freezer list and plenty of stuff to keep me going until the end of the month in there

Didn't quite manage 7 days as I went shopping today rather than tomorrow. We are a long way from a SM so as I was in town with work I thought I get it done to save a special trip (the price of fuel is crippling us more than the cost of food at the moment as we have to travel so far for work). Also, forecast snow and I hate driving in wintry conditions, I'd much rather stay cosy indoors and do some baking which I can now:D

I went to Mr M for a few bits and got 9 loaves of lovely bakery bread for 19p (normally £1.30 so we only get them when the are YS :money:) so these are now in the freezer and will last us between two and three weeks depending on how much snacking DS does:)

Went to Ald* for the rest and stuck to my list, which I based on my meal plan. Total spend £25.90 and I will not need to shop until next Friday at the earliest. Also paid Scout subs today so that should be it for this week as any outings will be free ones and we are entertaining at home which I actually prefer. We actually have a nice quiet weekend planned with friends and family over for dinner tomorrow and a walk on Sunday. Planning on baking tomorrow as we have just finished the last of the stuff I did for Christmas. Though I might to lemon drizzle and an iced apple cake as we seem to have eaten nothing but chocolate recently!

Well done for all your brilliant efforts. January in a hell of a month but we are all taking control:T

    Keep warm and safe

Donna if you like tea, twinings do free samples on their website. Well apart from the toilet roll and a bag of frozen chips the NS week has gone well. Must have saved at least £15 on not buying the usual extras. Apart from sitting on a friday night with a lemon water and not a glass of wine or diet coke, and no chance of winning the lottery (because i dont have a ticket!) its been fine.
