Unless things have changed since I worked on the fish counter MANY MANY moons ago while studying, in over-the-counter fish sales at a regular supermarket, 'Whole' means "I want both sides of the fish and the head and tail included", surely?

In regular 'selling-to-normal-members-of-the-public-like-me' parlance it doesn't mean "I want the guts too please". We all knew that, even without training.

The alternative to 'whole' isn't "I want the guts out, thanks", it's "Instead of a whole fish with head, tail and all the flesh, I'll just have a single fillet, please".

"Can I have some sea bass please?" should be answered with "sure - how many pieces/fillets would you like?"

"Can I have a whole sea bass please" should be answered with "sure - is this one OK?" (as they hand me a gutted, whole fish) or should be answered with "sure - is this one OK? Would you like me to gut it for you?" at a push.

I think that most people on here would agree that the fishmonger made a mistake by not noticing that the fish hadn't been gutted, and according to the OP, this makes him an imbecile.
which incidentally is the correct view - those opposed to my view are, quite frankly, imbeciles along with the 'Fishmonger'

Here's a nice simple question for you OP, and it's not a rhetorical one. I would really like to read your answer.

Are you a perfect human being who has never once made a mistake in your life, or are you a person who like the rest of the human race makes the occasional screwup, which according to your logic, also makes you an imbecile?

No a lot of people on here have said that I 'got what I asked for' and have then continued to insult and mock even ignoring the fact that the website states it should be a prepared fish and, just above, someone saying they used to work on a counter and it should be prepared and therfore overlooking the fact that the Fishmonger was wrong and the service was bad.

The more I have continued to stick to my original points the more abusive both they and I have become. This has caused a cycle whereby you now are taking the thread out of context by making it appear that its about people being perfect.

It isn't about that, it is about, has been about, still is about when I vented on a vent forum people tried to excuse the poor service and make out that it is my fault and within the first few posts the snide and nasty remarks began.

I take it then that you won't answer a simple question.

What was taken out of context?
You stated that the fishmonger was an imbecile when all they had done was to make a mistake, so I simply asked if you had ever made a mistake, and are therefore also an imbecile.
    It's your logic, not mine.

Was to see me and not serve me when no one else would come over (I'm positive that that is not considered good customer service practice, anywhre, period), mumbled things to me like he was 'busy' and 'I'd have to wait' and then didnt prepare the fish.

I consider that a series of mistakes, so you can take you simplified toy town logic about people being perfect set it alight and burn your straw man.

Good god, what a stupid thread.

If you don't want people's views to be posted in the thread, don't make the thread. It's a forum for a reason - people can counter your views and discuss.

I can see both sides, but at the end of the day it was a simple mistake - it doesn't make the person at the counter an imbecile.

No doubt I'm going to get a scathingly abusive reply from the OP about how I'm wrong and how nomatter what anyone says, he is correct.

    Sigh.
