You can also get the readycash from the Clydesdale bank. The Yorkshire bank is simply a trading name for the Clydesdale bank, so your account would be them anyway.

There is a Clydesdale in central London, if that helps. You could visit the branch and open the account.

Once the account is up and running, you get a use Internet Banking for paying bills, keeping tracks etc and the Post Office to payin cash and cheques.

The website for them is: https://www.cbonline.co.uk, and Yorkshire is https://www.ybonline.co.uk

  • I was in a similar situation myself about 6 months ago, no car and only a local costcutter, the nearest tesco is 20 miles away. Tried applying for several accounts to be able to shop with Tesco online only to be turned down by all of them, the wife has a Visa Electron but as you have discovered Tesco don't accept them.
I then got myself a Cash Plus Mastercard, it's a pre-pay card which i load with cash once a week at my local post office. The cash is usually available on my account the following business day and all purchases have no fee, but i think there is a £2 charge for withdrawing cash from an atm. The only drawbacks are there is a charge of about £15 to set the account up initially and a £5 charge each month, but the savings i make from being able to shop with Tesco rather than locally more than make up for this.
As it's a pre-pay card there are no credit checks to get one, i just had to send off some ID.

Anyway if you're interested you can check it out and apply here :

A poster in the above link stated that they were able to use their visa electron on their Halifax easycash account with Asda on-line

According to Yorkshire banks website there are no Yorkshire banks within 30 miles of me :(

I have looked into cards such as Quidity, the problem that i have with them is that they have to be topped up at a paypoint, and with the double buggy i cant get into any of the smaller shops round here  and end up walking to the co-op and spending a fortune while im in there :o which pretty much defeats the point of doing it :o

    Anymore suggestions gladly welcomed :o

Go to https://www.halifax.co.uk and apply for the easycash account, you get a visa electron and most places accept it (shops, internet etc).

I have a very bad credit score and still got one of these.

I seriously recommend it, apply online and they may request id from you, but I applied and received my card and account details a few week after so i didn't have to do a thing. The online banking is really good too.

I would def give it a go.............

They do accept electron in the shops but not on their web-sites.
But electron is expanding with a lightining speed and 95% of shops and about 90% web-sites do accept it now. Soon there will be no difference between Visa debit and Visa electron. It is all ready internationally accepted more than Maestro.

Yeah..........I agree, I have noticed a massive difference lately and most places accept it, which is a good thing for those of us who can't get a full current account
